    Coffee Roasting Prices

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I am just curious as to how much people pay to have their Green beans roasted by a professional.

I have been quoted $12 per kilo and min 5Kg - to me this seems far too much as there is no way that I can go through 2Kg let alone 5Kg before it is stale.

I am not after names of businesses ect just what other people are doing now that are not roasting at home.

    Cheers

    Matt

Why would you pay for someone to roast your coffee (on such a small scale) when you could buy their blends/SOs?

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

The beans that are on offer at this roaster are not as good as what can be bought from Bean Bay and rather expensive too.

I may see if they can lower the Kgs required. Just curious to see what limits are imposed on others

The problem that I face esp with my job is that I get sent away at a moments notice - and would not want Kgs of roasted coffee sitting there going stale and thus wasted.

I am not up to roasting at home at the moment but it is something that i may take up in the future should time allow

If you arent roasting at home I would assume youd be buying roasted.

Buy online or find a better roaster. I would be reluctant too if I were a roaster.

Veneziano in Melbourne used to have a small roaster that people could roast their beans in themselves. Im not sure what the status is on that anymore.

I am in Dubai so the options of roasters are few and far between - I can buy pre roasted from bean bay but considering the delivery time, the freshest option is obviously to get green beans and get them freshly roasted

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

    Hiya Matt.

At a guess I would reckon the seemingly steep price & min. quantity would be about it not being worth the pro roasters time and effort to do it for any less, given it would be time otherwise spent roasting his/her own product. And ofcourse, if they are roasting with a 7 or 15 kilo machine etc. that would account for the 5kg min.

If I was to sit down and crunch some figures including payment for my time, wear and tear on my machines, what I would be earning with that time otherwise (incl such things as brand development), packaging, tax etc. etc.... I would probably come up with a similar price, maybe more if my roasters batch size was less than 5kg of finished product...

It seems to me your choices are:
-Buy Browns from Andy via BeanBay, Its a very good option.
-Pay the $12 and consider $20 - $25 to be a fair and reasonable price for a premium roasted product...that is ofcourse assuming that the roaster in question can deliver a premium product from your greens...but then you have 5kg.
    - Buy a high end domestic roaster (such as a Hottop) or build a Breadmaker/Heat Gun set up and roast your own (I know you do not want to do this, but it is a good option and damn good fun!)
    - Find another commercial roaster that has a good selection of well roasted specialty beans and buy browns from them.

I must admit, buying greens and paying someone else to roast them for you seems like a well...curious option to me, but thats your choice and Im sure you have your reasons.

I know Ive waffled a bit, but hopefully there is something in here that is of value to you!
    Cheers and good-luck

Not really applicable if youre in Dubai, but yep, its a Sonofresco / "Green Bean" 600g fluid bed roaster and last time I was in at first pour it was still there with a "roast your own" sign attached.

When I need large quantities a local roaster will do up my greens to my specified profile for $10USD a batch. Each batch can be up too 25 pounds. Minimum batch size has never been discussed as if I need smaller amounts I roast them up myself. :)

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

    Hi Matt,

    I just buy retail coffee.

I think that you have to be fair on the coffee roaster. *First of all, they might well not be able to roast less than 5kg on their equipment. *Second, coffee roasting is their business. *In the same amount of time that it takes them to roast, say, 1kg of coffee for you, they could roast much more coffee for retail or wholesale sale.

You mentioned that their coffee is not as good as what can be bought on BeanBay. *If this is because they are not good roasters, then you might want to question whether or not you want them roasting your coffee. *Im interested to know on what basis you say that their coffee isnt as good as what can be bought on BeanBay. *If you are not happy buying coffee from them, you could always try buying coffee from somewhere else. *There are many coffee roasteries in Australia that will do mail order.

    Cheers,
    Luca

Have you looked at subscriptions from places such as squaremile in the UK?

I believe you can get a monthly subscription and get freshly roasted sent out for a fairly reasonable cost.

    Like that means anything anymore!

Good buy on the Gene... now there is no need to annoy the low quality roaster and youll never have 5kgs of roasted coffee laying around.

    WIN WIN :)

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

You can always buy a roaster and invest between $15,000 to $35,000 on a 5kg roaster, then install around $5000 to $20000, then rent, insurance, labour cost, purchasing of green, storage of green, cupping area, espresso machine, cups, sinks, hire staff, Tax and a few other things

    OR

    pay $12.00 a kg of min 5kgs

    OR

    buy RETAIL

    OR

    Buy home roaster.

What the guy is offering is not such a bad deal......

If all customers are like you Im better off selling ice to an eskimo ::)

To give you an example of Price - A single Origin like the Kenya Kaliluni AA is $145kg and all the way up to the sheiks blend which is $9000kg

Thanks for everyones advice and help

Chris has my whole setup sitting there waiting to ship over - cant wait!

    hahaha

you forgot to mention his mark up on green!!!!
He might as well charge 50cent to roast at those prices.

buy green for $10 a kg and sell at $130 a kg roasted and add $15 a kg for roasting. Something doesnt add up.

Ill come and roast for you. If you buy 10kg of my sheik coffee. Ill even deliver it on my knees at that price. Might move to to dubai and under cut him and charge half price.

    AndyL,

For someone with some experience setting up and running a cafe, some roasting experience under their belt and a bit of capital behind them, it sounds like Dubai might be a good market, if what Perth Matt is telling us about the cost of roasted coffee there is true.

Plenty of ex-pats and money flushed arabs willing to part with their cash for some gourmet coffee.

Know anyone who fits that description? ;)

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

They are pretty scary prices. It would be cheaper if Matt brought a 5kg Probat.

I would make up several blends.

Virgin blend. Each single origin roasted by beautiful virgin.

Billionaires club. A coffee only billionaires drink.

Not going to just market to rich people....

    Brazil Santos... $150 per kg.

    Ill have great deals too

Buy 10kgs of coffee get a free Synesso.

Buy 20kgs of coffee get a free Synesso and a barista for a month.

Seems like all the big chefs are heading to Dubai for that same reason $$

    Re: Coffee Roasting Prices

But why would you want to pay for roasting coffee if you can do it yourself at home!
Heres how I do it. Read further to know more:

I have found when I do green beans for a large group I steam them in butter water( not over cooking them you want them barley soft) then I drain them but keeping about 1 cup of the water then I add cranberries and sliced almonds to them toss together with 2 tbs of a (2 tbs) butter (1 1/2 tsp) garlic powder (1 tbs) ground black pepper mixture then replace the little bit of water and let them set with a lid on for 5 mins before serving.

    Hope this helps you. :)

Great investment Perth Matt. Roasting your own is great. Youll never look back - only wonder why you didnt do it sooner.

I still lug all my Corretto setup out every week. Its only the freezing nights in winter that get me wondering...
