    Howdy,

    I would like to make flat whites using 290ml mugs. Can anyone advise roughly what shot size would be needed for this size mug?

    Cheers.

    Depends on how strong you like your coffee

    For me at 290ml I would probably go for a double (60ml of espresso)

    yeah, id be looking at close to a double myself. A single shot is Ok for about 200ml, maybe a double ristretto would suit it well?

    Since I put a double ristretto in a 90-100 ml latté, I suggest 6 shots for a 290 ml drink.

    Shot Size - 290ml Mug

    How about you try it this way?:

    Pull your shot(s) into your mug.

    Add whatever sugar (or not) you feel you might want.

    Stretch the milk.

    Add the milk 50 ml or so at a time and taste as you go.

    One of the things that surprised me was how LITTLE milk I wanted when I got the ristretto shots working well. Whenever I have guests I urge them to try their latté/flat white "short" to start. Very few take extra milk beyond the 100 ml.

    And remember--Its all about what tastes good to you. ;)

    I gave a 290ml sized beverage a double ristretto shot with a 21 gram basket (more like a triple ristretto haha).

    Re: Shot Size - 290ml Mug

    My family enjoy a 60ml double shot in a 300ml latte...

    seems to be a typical brew...if I feel like a weaker coffee I will share the shot with another cup.

    Looking at this from the other direction, what would be the maximum cup size to use with a double synesso basket to make 2 lattes/flat whites at the same time.

    I currently use a large 340ml cup with a double shot but there are times when I need 2 in a hurry.

    This really depends upon the person. For me - I dont like a single in anything larger than 160mL cup and Ill use a a double rist. in a 210mL glass.

    Yep but it is all in the brew ratios. It is the same amount of liquid but it has alot more coffee per mL of water giving something that I am happy with in a 210mL glass (provided the coffee is able to cut through milk). However I will still use (and enjoy) a doppio ristretto in a 160mL cup.

    My thoughts have always been one or two really great small ones rather than a bucket of average coffee....Horses for courses I guess :-?

    Re: Shot Size - 290ml Mug

    I seem to have gone from a single 30ml shot to a double shot in my 190ml cup now. A 30ml shot just isnt strong enough for flat whites or cappucinnos in a 190ml cup.

    If I use our 300ml mugs I pull 45ml through a Synesso double basket and this is 18-21gms depending on my technique on the day. Thats the ratio we use for that longer milk based drink anyway.

    Re: Shot Size - 290ml Mug

    Lately Ive been pulling some shifts in an espresso bar that is focused completely on take-away.

    Im fairly taken back at just how large most of them are; three sizes, 8oz/12oz/16oz.

    8oz = 236ml
    12oz = 354ml
    16oz = 473ml

    When a majority of your orders are of the 12 oz side, can you really ask if a double ristretto will cut it? What would cut it for a 16oz at that! Three shots apparently. I beg to differ, but to deliver a fine coffee in a takeaway cup really pushes the limits of a single three-group.

    Id refrain from buying anything other than small T/A coffees these days, especially if you like it strong. I find the difference between an ordinary latte and double latte for a 12oz tends to be just the extra 15ml or so that is usually skipped for a double ristretto
