Re: Coffee lovers forking out $12 a cup for trendy brews

For the $12 choice, customers get a "coffee consultant" to demonstrate the brewing method, taste-test four coffees in a "cupping" session matched to their preference profile and savour a special reserve coffee grown at 1750m above sea level.
So I would suggest that the headlines are the usual Media beat up *;D

    1: Taste 4 coffees - cupping admidiately

2: Savour a special reserve coffee grown at 1750m above sea level

3: Personalised attention *;) *If one on one

Then $12 is cheep if you look at the materials and the time..

However.. Your in teh SHOP... *How many will walk out without buying something else ??

A good way to promote ya goods and good coffee... What is wrong with that...

If ya look at post http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1259788999/5#5 *you can see how the issue of “cognitive dissonance” has been managed prior to purchase *:D ;D 8-)

The issue is that I was never able to implement prior to wives one and two... Number three is still being assessed *;D

He warned that consumers shelling out for a coffee at some cafes risked being served cheap, inferior beans in their espresso blend mix.
Well Ill be, its amazing how easy it is to part people from their hard earned cash, $12 a cup eh, I thought the days of snake oil salesmen had passed, sorry salespersons. :P

No Jon, its not $12 a cup.

Id be happy to pay the asking price to get to sample some different brews, take in the theatre of the process, and have a chat to someone who is passionate aand knowledgeable about what they are serving. Might not do it every day, but once in a while, $12 for this is really a bargain.

whats snakeoil about this? does the product make any claims to do or be something that it isnt?

I dont really have a problem with this. Products and services find their own price in the market.

Maybe some coffees and the service that goes with them SHOULD cost $12.

Sorry guys, we will agree to disagree on this one.
I very much doubt this person can tell me anything I cant find out for myself on Google.
If you want to pay $12 to watch a guy brew some coffee and feed you a line of hocus pocus then go for it, its your money.
Its a fad, trendy now and may well be for a while, then well move on to the next side show that someone is probably workin on as we speak.
Young people "discover/invent" a new "process/way of doing things" and the old timers say havent we seen this all some time in the past? Seen the wheel turn a few times now and it always finishes up back at the start.
Sure Im a cynical/curmudgeonly old bastard guess it comes with age ::)
Im sure youll enjoy the show without me. *;)

Dont trust google... Should say .. I dont trust what most people find on google. Most only do a one sided research and ignore teh counter arguments.. In addition.. Too many sites are all fad related and managed by fanatics.. *Further more most can not even search a forum.. So how can they search the world.

Brewing and cupping is not hocus pocus.. *It is the basis for much of what the good roasters produce.. I am sure Andy and many others - not withstanding their commercial interests.. Would scoff at this comment as to "hocus pocus"

I am an old fart as well... But it is good to see the old traditional skills being re visited and teh new generation informed..

If some one can make a little $$ out of it... Great... *The $12 is not a rip off and better than many so called TAFES and others charge for a 2 hr BARISTER course...

I am for sharing knowledge and understanding... Not about tucking it away... If it is always tucked away... Then teh Start (As you referenced) will be lost.. * I guess for many GJ is teh start and the way to go / the future; if some effort is not applied, by people who are truly passionate.

Mind you during my 35 years in business imparting knowledge and providing information was called customer service and was provided free of charge, nowadays business people expect you to start paying for the privilege of breathing the air in their exclusive establishments as soon as you cross the threshold, aint nuthin free any more. :(

Well I think it is good value when some establishments are charging $4 for a cup of swill. The opportunity to taste a range of different coffees from the premium end of the market is going to see me line up if I ever get to Melbourne.

I await your all encompassing and comprehensive tome on every aspect of coffee, all gleaned from Google with great anticipation.

Sure, MAYBE you might not learn anything new, but what if, just what if, at the very LEAST, its oh, I dont know, fun? Or are you too old and curmudgeonly for that too? Having seen it all before perhaps youve had all the fun youre going to have?

Its all about the experience, the sights, the sounds, the closeness to the beans... not to mention you actually get to try different kinds of beans in one sitting.

Slayer and a 15 hour cold drip.. You have to be there to experience it!
obtw, its only $3.50 for a COE El Salvador Los Planes espresso based coffee..

Hey Jon W, the Unico pulls a fabulous espresso, has the smaller boiler (wife rarely drinks coffee) but can easily cope with coffee for 8 if need be. I really bought it for that retro look and thoe side panels go beautifrlly on our Tassie Oak bench. I have always been in love with the Faema e61 from a practical and aesthetic point of view and this machine sort of realized my dream of retro+faema e61+ modern reliability/domestic practicality. It is a dream fit and savesme having to spend my life running out to buy those pesky $12 coffees!

if that $12 means spending 10min with Toshi then its money well spent - the guy is a flippin phenomenon with a palate that is out of this world and a memory for coffee profiles like a good sommelier should have for wine

Id pay $12 to pick Toshis brain on cofee and would consider getting a chance to taste the stuff an added bonus!

In your eyes it may well be, but as Edith Piaf said (No Regrets) its been one hell of a ride, and guess what? the curtain hasnt come down yet ;)
Fun! a juvenile term, you reach a stage in life where enjoyment and quality take over from fun, and Im enjoying a new grand child, family, going overseas each year for the past 5 (off to the US again in 2010) my new Bezzera GD, photography, and learning how to roast coffee.
Yep the fun is over, and Im enjoying life like never before.
But I still aint gonna pay 12 stinkin bucks to watch some clown in a funny cap make (some serious gourmet sh!t!) in a vac pot, even if I do get to consume the fruits of his labour. ;D *

Ahhh, love, aint it a wonderful thing? I can understand why your enamoured with the US.
Pesky $12 cups! for $12 I can buy another kilo of green beans that will give me around 50 espressos, works out to about 20 cents a cup, and I can share these 50 cups with friends and family, now thats value for money. ;)

and here we are again - bandying around terms like juvenile. Why does being old make you so freakin superior?

Why is fun "juvenlie"? Sounds to me like youre having a lot of "fun" in the current phase of your life, but are perhaps a little too old, curmudgeonly, and dare i say narrow minded to admit it.

I went there today and they were busy as all hell so the publicity didnt hurt.

They were a bit overwhelmed though, I had my coffee at the register and waited 5mins to pay as the Barista didnt know how to use the
    reigster.

Lots of people were lining up to try the syphon experience.

I hope it goes well, and the more people who learn about what goes into making a GREAT coffee the better. A more discerning general public is good for the industry as a whole.

Anyway, I had a very nice double ristretto kenyan + el salvador blend made on the Slayer. $3

Went there today, and all i can say is... I WAS IN HEAVEN. Staff were really friendly and helpfull, the atmosphere was great and the coffee, weeell...it was awesome. Had the Costa Rican Geisha in the syphon ($12) was it worth the$$$ perhaps not, but it wont stop me from paying that much again. As a snob i think i am obliged to try the top end at whtever cost.
I also tried a double espresso from the Mypressie Twist. F@#king amazing! What the hell is this thing!? If you only drink espresso then this is the way to go for budget home espresso ($300approx)

Re: Coffee lovers forking out $12 a cup for trendy brews

Well, salvatore certainly has a good PR person, but...

Jon W, you could drop the patronising tone ;) just because youre trying to wind hazchem up for fun....sorry, enjoyment, doesnt make it right.

it could be argued youve given up pursuit of quality and are merely a forum warrior ;)

having said that, its not worth $12 if youve decided not to get $12 of appreciation out of it. sounds like you arent, while Im sure hazchem would. Toshi from St.Ali/Sensory Lab is well-regarded/world-renowned for his siphon/syphon skills, and unless your grasp of japanese exceeds Googles, you might learn something.

...essentially this goes back to the commodity argument./\/, which was a whole separate flame war.
