Melb to Sydney Road Trip - coffee stops?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
i know this is prob the wrong spot for this post but im sure the mods will move this to the appropriate spot

im a few days away from a road trip back to Sydney (starting in Melbourne) and wondered if anyone had any great coffee spots to stop revive survive?

im taking the Hume all the way.

Normally i stop at the maccas outside wadonga, then albury and finally in goulburn, but this time ill take the opportunity to try somewhere new :)

    anyone have any suggestions?

suggestions for coffee spot open before 6am north of the cbd for an eye opener would also be greatly appreciated! (since Silvia and Rocky will be tightly boxed in the back seat of my car ;D)

    Hey Sameer,

I normally do the trek once or twice a year and usually just suffer bad coffee or go without. To my knowledge theres no place that is exceptional enough to warrant a stop; and certainly some of the coffee making practices Ive seen whilst eating have made my eyes pop out.

Theres one place in Holbrook that claims to have the best coffee on the hume. Black signs for miles before you reach town. It might be worth a try, though I keep driving now.

If your willing to veer of the beaten track a little to Canberra you should go see Attilio @ CosmoreX coffee in Fyshwick and take some of Micks blend home with you :)

Be ware though, you wont want to leave!

Ive had a passable brew at the little cafe attached to the cinema in Albury before. IIRC they are supplied by Veneziano so at least the base product they are using is high quality. Im not going to pretend it was the most awesome brew Ive ever had, but I finished it and was happy enough to have another when travelling in the other direction.

I drive Sydney to Adelaide at xmas every year, and also take Miss Silvia and, in the past, Rocky. If the hotel room has space, I take them out and set them up, if not I make pourover. Yes, I have a problem .... This year well be taking the K10.

i ended up stopping at zoi espresso in albury (its also next to the cinema in albury). roasts their own beans, and looked the busiest of the 5 cafes next to each other there

ordered a double was quite nice, house blend i think, a bit fruity and light acidity. nice enough that i ordered another

the second double burnt my tongue and i couldnt taste anything :(

    oh well :-/

Also another one a couple of blocks away around the corner (hole in the wall combined with a cafe, look for the 2 mazzers if i remember correctly)

Shame Shepparton isnt on the hume, id point you in the direction of gb coffee in shepp, they roast their own and make a nice brew

Another place in Albury is Coffee Mamma at 5/501 Olive St. Only coffee and biscuits. They roast their own beans. Bens for sale. Also run a coffee cart on Saturday a.m. at the Caltex servo on Dean St near Chifley hotel. We had very good coffee but we thought the price for a coffee a little steep. The place had a busy feel about it though so the locals must be happy.

That place made the worst coffee of my whole trip when I drove from Newcastle to Launceston and back a year ago. I definitely didnt stop everywhere, so could have missed a really good coffee shop.... it was a fairly forgettable trip though on the coffee front.

For the record, I never did get a coffee from there, but after lining up for 10 minutes (they werent super busy, just super slow) and watching them spoon on meringue to the top of their coffees, I left. I mean, I had a personal best time to beat and nodoze pills to tied me over.

I did however stand right behind Red Simons and his family, so that was kind of a highlight.

ACog, next time you are travelling, jump off the Hume at Albury and come and see us at Coffee Mamma. You may be quite surprised! Regards, Matt :)

I stopped at that place in Holbrook - dont bother !!!

If you have time I would highly recommend a detour off the Hume via Beechworth (Gigis great coffee and the Beechworth Bakery and must visit Bridge Rd Brewery) and Yackandandah (Sticky Tarts - excellent coffee). But this wopuld add an hour at least to your trip.

    Enjoy the drive !

    Cheers
