Naked group handle or Pullman Tamper

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Decisions, decisions...

I came second in the 10000 CSers comp and I cant decide what I should choose! I thought some lovely CSers could help me :)

Custom Pullman tamper? or Naked PF from Jetblack Espresso ? Or will an Avacuppa Gene Cafe roaster help me more (though I can barely make great coffee, the thought of roasting my beans then waiting a week before I can use them almost makes me hyperventilate)

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for the help!

Im not sure if I qualify for the "lovely CSer" description but if it was my choice, Id go the Gene Cafe! Without downplaying the Pullman or Jetblack contribution, the GeneCafe is a more valuable prize and roasting is definitely something worth getting involved in.

The trick with roasting is to prepare ahead so the beans have rested for long enough once you have finished your current beans.
But ... also try your beans at various times after roasting to find out what your optimum rest time is.

Congrats to you and the other prize winners.

If you have a shitty tamper at the moment then Id recommend going the pullman tamper. I really enjoy the deluxe tamper that Ive been using lately and currently rate it above the espressocraft 9th street tamper that I have at home.

IMHO, as nice as a Pullman or Naked GH would be - assuming you dont currently roast and have the place and time to do so - the Gene would save you money on beans and add a whole new dimension to your coffee journey.

Im not sure Im at the stage of roasting yet, Im still quite new to coffee.

I forgot to mention that I have a decent-ish tamper now with a wooden handle weight about 350g. Its not custom fitted or anything, but its still more functional than most tampers and quite aesthetically pleasing.

My coffee making is still a work in progress, so Im leaning more to the tamper or naked PF for diagnostics. Plus theyre both REALLY pretty.

Then i would suggest the naked group handle then...

Not only can you woo your friends with it but it can tell you a lot about the way you dose and tamp, possibly leading to better espresso :)
And isnt that what we all want?

Seeing as though you already have a half decent tamper and are not looking to do the roasting side of things just yet...

To be honest, a naked group handles novelty will wear off in a week. What it will do though is expose all, if any, flaws you have during extraction. Expect a few squirts of espresso in your eye!

My naked pf is on blind filter duties and always will be.

    I say:

    1) gene cafe simply because it costs the most and its a great product!
    2) custom pullman tamp....CUSTOM!
    3) naked pf

    what wushoes says.

nakeds are nice for extraction diagnosis, but you lose something in the taste of a shot - I only use them when I really want to bring out fruits & florals.

Moot points as tashie has already chosen the Pullman, but that would have been my selection order too.

Enjoy your Pullman tashie. I think it was a great choice

Arent you contradicting yourself there John? Do you lose something or do you gain something in a shot from a naked handle?

I found mine invaluable for correcting my technique. Now I use mine primarily for backflushing; occasionally, when Im pouring a shot into a measuring glass and sometimes, when I need to prepare two double ristrettos quickly.
Its also enjoyable watching a good shot from a naked.

    Good choice tashie.
The Pullmans are a beatiful piece of kit (Ive got two).

I use my nekid gh all the time as I enjoy watching the pours.
The novelty has not worn off yet and its been well over a week now. :P

Re: Naked group handle or Pullman Tamper

    Thanks guys,

I thought about the Gene Cafe too as I figured if I didnt know what I want, I should just go with the most expensive.

Then figured thats not good logic at all as I could be depriving someone else of something they had been coveting, not to mention that Im not that interested in roasting my own beans. Im still developing my espresso technique and my latte art is well - crap! (Yes I know I shouldve probably taken the class with David - I had a laugh)

AM has generous donated a NON Knacid? Rancilio? PF to my cause. So now all I need is to find someone who wants to take a drill or lathe to it :D

CUSTOM PULLMAN indeed! Very exciting - been coveting one for ages and every single person on the net who has ever bought one raves about them - I figure the pictures probably dont do them justice.

Since you are all Pullman owners, any favourites or suggestions? I wont be orderin til the New Year - sure Robin is flat out already.

My 1st choice would have been a Barista tamper in the blue but due to my 54mm baskets i was restricted to the Delux... not thats there is anything wrong with that mind you i just had my heart set on a blue tamper :) Ill just have to get another machine with 58mm baskets so i can get one finally :D

Instead i went with the wooden handled Delux with the checkerboard style multi wood handle....VERY NICE!

YES! I am coveting the Grape and Robin was restocking the shelves when I last called him as they just got more in.
Best colour IMO, followed by that dark red.

The Jarrah is option two but I like a heavier tamper, and the Jarrah isonly 275g.

    Current no-name tamper weighs 377g.

good question, and kinda hard for me to answer in a few words, so sorry that this is long & verbose. Id say the answer is kinda, kinda not. for instance, Im drinking a great Sidamo at the moment from the Oromia co-operative. Pulled with a naked, the berry fruit aromas come to the front, however the red cherry, demerera sugar and hint of spice dominate. If I had one shot like this, Id probably say "wow, I love this coffee". Absolutely fantastic when Im in the mood for a fruit bomb.

However, some of the cocoa notes are muted, and there are subtle woods and complexities in the mid-palate which are lost - knowing this coffee comes from mixed crop plantations probably helps me guess at the descriptors in the background, but being able to taste what in perfume would be known as bottom, middle and top notes evenly is something I look for in a shot.

Luca mentioned in another post that he doesnt like the ristretto culture because in some single origin shots he might want to taste the balance that an espresso brings to the pour, while in others he might enjoy the expression of that bean as a ristretto, and he wants to be the one who decides.

Likewise, the best expression of a roasted s.o. or blend in a cup might be with the naked portafilter for that particular bean. Possibly the increased cooling off the exposed basket might change the flavour of a bean or two in a positive manner.

So, in a few words, it depends on the bean and what you want from it?

Hey squirrel, I saw! Very cool. I want a custom thingy but I dont really have an icon - so i figure its a waste of money.

I still cant decide between the Jarrah or Grape Handle.

Also deciding between the 316 base or the normal base with two handles - is that frivolous? :P

Ive got err... four or five spare Pullman Handles in various types of wood that I cycle through my Tampers, as the mood takes me. I wouldnt call it frivolous at all tashie ::) ;D

I also find that the naked brings out the floral /fruity notes more...its has been consistent for me compared to the spouts so I reckon there is a def difference and the additional viscosity of the cream is a nice touch.

    Cheers

Mal makes an interesting point... you could take two handles if youre really that undecided Tashie... Id be more inclined to take the two handles than a 316 base - while the finish can sometimes be slightly better on the 316s over the 304s, its not always the case and both of them tamp just as well as each other.

    There you go Tashie..... ;D

I can lay my hands on three of then for you, my eldest son has one and theres another one hiding in the back of the cupboard somewhere I think, just cant put my hands on it at the moment. Youve gotta love the warm glow in those timbers though.... 8-)

L-R.... Tasmanian Huon Pine, Red Gum and the famous Checker-board handle. My son has the Jarrah handled Tamper and I cant remember what the remaining one is. Theyre all beautiful though :-*

All hail! [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] They are so beautiful.

I see youve even got one from the retro days of the website being engraved on. Thatll be a collectors one day.

I wonder which CSer has the biggest collection of tampers now :) and then Gregs tampers specifically... (Greg is naturally disqualified).

I am leaning more and more towards the two handles :D Thanks guys!

Gotta say the pullman is worth its weight in 304 stainless steel...

Love my blue handled one, but Im a sucker for anything blue.

Now you just have to buy yourself the naked p/f. Ive had mine for nearly a year, and the novelty still hasnt worn off. I use nothing else for my single coffees, I only pull out the double p/f when mum comes around for a coffee ;D

Re: Naked group handle or Pullman Tamper

Um... well on top of the microwave at home I have a convex Deluxe with a Cocobolo handle (one of only two ever made), a euro convex base, a flat base and a spare Jarrah handle. Then theres a flat Barista with a grape handle that our logo engraving wasnt quite right... theres also a cobalt and a stealth handle, plus two Malabars in a grit-blasted finish which I tried as an experiment - feels really nice but looks just too dull. Then theres a Coffeelab and a Reg Barber. So there are actually two complete Pullmans plus the CL and the RB (4 complete tampers) but enough other parts to make probably another three or four tampers if I was so inclined! ;D

Thats not counting the collection of prototype Baristas and Deluxes sitting in a cupboard gathering dust somewhere which would blow the collection out to a dozen or so.

    Your wish is.... ;)

Its a beautiful wood, gorgeously figured with light and dark stripes and red tonings with a very fine grain, high gloss finish and deep lustre. Id make it a stock item except the wood is horrendously expensive and extremely difficult to get outside the US. Still, when theres a will...

    Thats beautiful timber Greg.
Remindes me a little of Jarrah.

Do you turn them on a copy lathe or by hand?

Re: Naked group handle or Pullman Tamper

Yep a few similarities there Ronin. Theyre both deepish in colour and we do occasionally get some through that have quite interesting designs, but generally speaking Jarrah is less interesting than Cocobolo and it also has a more open grain so doesnt typically get such a deep lustre.

Theyre all turned by hand on a manual lathe; as such there are sometimes slight variations in the shape if its been a while since the wood turner looks at the sample hes got but I guess thats part of the beauty of a hand-made product.

That really is stunning. Malaysia (where I am from) has some really nice woods, maybe next time I go back Ill pick some bits and pieces up for you to have a play with Greg.

I want to start a thread where people show off their tamper collection. Should be fun!

Aqis are the people interested in this sort of thing, wood is usually ok provided there are no insect holes in it, just make sure you declare it so they can do their thing. ;)
