Chance meeting and the Sign of the Snob

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Well by strange and disturbing coincidence hazbean and lucinda discovered
on Thursday morning that, not only that they know each other, but live a
mere 700 metres apart in the leafy Adelaide suburb of Belair. Weve been
running into each other for years at Lucias, Adelaides oldest coffee house, in the
    Central Market.

So now we can get together for joint roasts (sorry), figuring out new
MDF mods, swapping green beans, and all sorts of things.

It occurred to me that we need a Snob Sign so that we can recognize
each other and increase the chances of such meetings.

I have a proposal, based on painful personal experience. Decided a couple
of weeks ago to do a larger (450g) Corretto roast. All went well, fiddled
around for a while with cooling trays because I dont have a fancy cooler,
    all under control.

Then I thought Id make swMbo happy by packing up the roasting gear
straight away, rather than the usual two or three days. Started
with the heat gun -- should have cooled down after all that fussing
    around.

Wrong. Brushed my forearm against the tip. Immediate ouchhh burn.

This has now calmed down to a nice triangular mark that would be
immediately recognized by anyone who knows these things. So
this could be the Sign. All we have to do is discreetly show
the mark and make an innocent comment about coffee.

There are other benefits as well. The cycle of the burn
closely follows the cycle of the coffee. Hurting like
hell -- coffee degassing. Blister diminishing -- coffee
on the way. Blister gone -- time to use the beans.
Then start all over again :)

And when Corretto goes commercial, this could be the brand (sorry
    again).

Alternatively, could just have a little bean lapel pin sold on
BeanBay. Maybe use it to wear your snobbery on your sleeve ...

Sorry about the rave. With temp coming up to 41C its too hot
    to do anything else.

OG and I are still laughing about this one, as are a few people I have told. It goes to show what a small world it is. ;D

I had a laugh! I love the Sign of the Snob idea. A pin would be great! All wed need to do would be to get one made up to look like the logo above, then wed all recognise it easily enough!

The brandings a bit extreme though as not all members roast their own beans. (That may come as a shock to you, so I hope youre sitting down!)

I sympathise with you there Hazbean. I too had branded myself with a heatgun soon after starting with the BM. Takes all the fun out of roasting, and it sure hurts! But the brand did go away luckily and I survived to roast again another day :)

Love the chance meeting too! Ill be in Adelaide in a few weeks ........

I can see the secret handshake now - you touch fingers, make a Tsssssst! sound and say, "Ow, ow burny burny".

Or we could borrow from the catholics or Aldous Huxley and make the sign of the cup

OK - put me in the Lapel pin camp.

Branding is easier than stated above.
All you need to do is put your forearm on the group head for a second and you have a nice brand for a week at least.
Then all you need to do is raise your arm to show the mark.

    Id rather a lapel pin.

Actually, a tattoo is more permanent, and at least you dont have to worry about constantly renewing it!

Re: Chance meeting and the Sign of the Snob

Well, we met Sunday and I got a fantastic homeroasting lesson using both the popper and the iRoast and I feel very confident about roasting my own now.

Hazbean gave me some of the beans we roasted and this morning I fresh ground and cupped some of them. I couldnt wait any longer as I had run out of beans anyhow and I am not the most patient of people.

Well, spike (my gaggia) loved the fresh ground beans and produced a goggeous crema, the like I havent seen in a while. I had a wee taste of the unadulterated shot and it was delicious. I do prefer milk and a wee touch of sugar, although I always have a taste before I add each of these.

It was superb and even though the beans I buy are fairly fresh, I have never had a coffee as fresh and delicious as this.

Thankyou to the Hazbeans for a great day. I hope you had as much fun as I did.

Yes, we had a good time. Good to hear that the results are good!

Yes really fresh coffee does have a lush crema.

I was a bit disturbed at achieving thermal cutout with two poppers
on consecutive batches, as neither of them of them have ever done
anything like that before. Both are working fine now, so must have just
    been the 30+ ambient temp.

Just waiting now to hear how your popper goes with that Tiger Mountain!

Re: Chance meeting and the Sign of the Snob

I roasted the first batch of tiger mountain a couple hours ago, and with todays cooler temp the popper took approx 11 - 12 mins to geet to a bouncing second crack with no thermal cut out.

It will be interesting to see how it tastes in a few days.

    Well, 11 - 12 mins to 2nd for a popper is quite a good time. :)

Nice choice of bean there Lucinda, the Indian Tiger Mountain is my favourite SO that I have home roasted so far. I am sure you will have a ball with home roasting. I am sure OG will be impressed with the results as well. I am sure everyone would enjoy some pics of your roasts as well.
