Just me or is this way suss?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Found an interesting old machine on the auction site the other day- at a ridiculous price, so its not one Id be interested in...

What was of interest in the machine was the boiler. Dunno if Im imagining things, but what do we reckon the stuff surrounding the boiler is? *:-? :o

Yea... We use to mix it by hand and make a "mud" from it and apply to the exhaust stacks on the old Navy patrol boats up north... Was common practice for all boats; to lag the exhaust pipes etc...

In fact my dad mined the raw stuff along with gold and we used to play with the rocks and peel the fibres off and also play with all the mercury :o * :o

Still have some of these rocks in the rock collection..

Strange how what we did *one day; then turns out to be BAD for one...

    1: Mobile phones any one *::) ::) ::)
2: Sound systems directly connected to ones ears *:-X :-X :-X

    So did it sell ???

looks a lot like KO wool was used in lagging and soundproofing just as bad as the other..

Re: Just me or is this way suss?

It may or may not he Asbestos based. Most industrial boiler lagging is actually Glass based with one form or another of mineral additives depending on temp range.

If thats the case then there is no real problem health wise but a secondry wrap could be done with a heat resistant fabric to catch any loose material.

On the other hand if the seller doesnt know what it is :o :o :o run away.

The Olympia Cremina used to use asbestos.
    It looks the same.

Comes off easy if soaked overnight in water.

Asbestos is fairly safe when handled wet (Please note this is still not perfectly safe). You might be surprised how much pipe is still AC based and in use. :o I have sold water jet cutting gear for this purpose to a large water board in Victoria its the dust that is the problem :-/

As to $15k tell im hes dreamin ;D

Re: Just me or is this way suss?

    Yes well.....

Myself and a number of other trainees employed by a large multi-national engineering firm, were exposed to veritable clouds of asbestos dust while commissioning electrical installations in a number of new and refit ships in the late 60s.

This was going on while the ships engines were having their exhausts and turbos lagged and we were in the bowels of the ship proving wiring continuity prior to powering up the ships systems. We were definitely unaware of the hazards associated with asbestos back then, were never offered any form of protection (not that it would have been of much use) and I remember coughing up fibres of the stuff for days afterwards, as did my mates.

Since becoming aware of the dangers of the stuff, it has been a bit nerve-wracking every time I visit the family doctor for the annual check-up and X-Rays, etc.

We also practically swam in PCB transformer insulating fluid too, but thats another story....

    Mal.

Re: Just me or is this way suss?

Floor layer by trade prior to my current line of work, old school asbestos tiles etc, fortunately for me the dangers of the stuff were well known, there was a small church that had 3 layers of asbeston backed tiles, and some in the roof too, the entire building had to be "bubbled" by plastic sheet, the clear plastic sheet was then blown up like a jumping castle, the asbestos removers then went in, removed it inside this "jumping castle" packed it all up in air tight parcels and dumped it in the appropriate manner........for 35m2 of tiles and a small amount in the ceiling cost in excess of 35k to remove :o..........bad bad stuff >:(

Probably should have explained more before posting.... bad me!

It does come off easy after an overnight soak. If the unit is kept under the water while removing the fibres are kept in the water.

Would I recommend? Probably not as it is still dangerous. Just saying that it is possible.
You then have to find a way of disposing.
