    Al Pacino and Vittoria.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Noticed this http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/plenty-of-hoohah-for-coffee-20100603-x106.html in the SMH this AM, dont know it will improve the quality of the coffee but it may help sales.
Cant imagine they are planning to export to the states so perhaps we are destined to see the ad here.
Or maybe Vittoria are planning to open up in the US.
Pacinos quote says it all I drink coffee all the time, so I think that should qualify me as someone who knows about coffee. that coming from an American, most of the stuff served over there is undrinkable. :o

Anywhere serving Vittoria is my least favourite cafe choice as I find it a very bitter coffee and does not suit my taste for a rich mellow flavour. Maybe the Yanks will like that character however. Putting it in a litre of hot milk with six sugars would help, I guess.

    Al Pacino and THAT coffee

I always thought Al Pacino was a great actor but he has out done himself in that ad for V****a crap - he is, without doubt an even better actor than I would ever have imagined him to be.

    I agree... great acting.
    ::)

...although having said that if the ad campaign converts a few instant coffee drinkers to whole beans then one day we will see them here on their journey to great coffee.

Perhaps he drinks it from the country it is roasted. Perhaps the quality is far superior/fresher to what we get. Also remember that it is likely he has a different taste in coffee than we do. Italians like it strong and bitter hence the use of Robusta. Americans it seems like a dark roast and drink tall blacks. Were not comparing apples with apples here.

All that said I have a coffee DVD where a well known australian barista is endorsing a product and he shows a pour that he says looks delicious that to me looks VERY underwhelming.

Agree with andy though because it is certainly a big shift in coffee marketing where we are use to seeing instant coffee ads.

    what, Australia?

As good as any actor is, they are for the most part empty vessels waiting for a role to fill them up. At least thats been my experience. The point being, put an actor in an ad and pay them money, and theyll say what you tell them to.

Acting is a job. You get hired, you do the job. I believe Pacino drinks that coffee regularly as much as I believe Clooney drinks nothing but stale pod garbage.

Personally, Im more annoyed that a Nick Drake song was used as the backing music. Poor bugger is long dead and has no say in which silly ad uses his music!

He would probably be happy that his music was being appreciated, at long last. Anyway, its not the first time his song has been used in an ad. "Pink Moon" was used in a Volkswagen ad a few years ago. While it wasnt the best showcase for his music, it did make him known to many people who hadnt previously heard his music.

Robert de Niro is my favourite of the great actors, Al Pacino close behind...but that ad....

Spruiking coffee hes probably never heard of, looking like a down and out New York tramp does him no good.

There is no credibility when he seeks to stamp his credentials as a knowledgeable coffee drinker. Spilling coffee over his script does not make him a passionate coffee expert---it makes him sloppy.

And that punchline " this is good coffee", followed by the apparent nervous rapping of fingers over the table.... leaves me stone cold.

Al, maybe its time for Scarface II if you need the money that bad. :-[

    All so true...

In fact one of the better short Coffee moves is " Coffee and Cigarettes " if ya ask me...

Now not sure what the quality of teh coffee was like, but still a collection of short clips I find realistic and can watch with out feeling bored.

Now had Al Pacino or Robert de Niro been in this collection it would have added to their standing.

If ya have not seen it; your doing your self a disfavour - go and get it and watch it NOW...

Just look at the following and some of teh actors and what teh short stories are about...

Actually I think its a clever use of sign language, as in gaming parlour parlance a a double tap of the fingers means, "Hit me" as in "Keep em coming!"

The coffee drinking Americans ive encountered seem to like a litre of milk (or that terrible creamer stuff), 4-5 sugars with a little coffee thrown in for taste.

Terrible, terrible direction to take coffee and one thats infiltrated Australia in recent years with the ever growing presence of a certain chain store (or two).

On one of the Ads variants, you see the Barista tamping the portafilter in the air as he tamps it. Interesting technique!

    SPeaking of Al Pachino...

from the 2010 Annual Bulwer Lytton :

    Vile Puns -
    Dishonorable Mention:

Wearing his new slacks from L.L. Bean, and entering the pen to feed his three big dogs their usual three cans of dog food, some of which ended up on his new pants, Kevin then left the house to attend a revival screening of ‘Serpico’ with Alpo chinos.

When I was over there the most prevalent coffee I came across was filter coffee. Just about every shop had an urn.

I had trouble finding espresso in a lot of places, well except for Seattle...... ;D

The quote (I think is from)

Rolando Schirato - Victoria Coffee sales and marketing manager

He was surprised by the flak he received, most of it from Australia and from what he calls small roasters from Brisbane and coffee snobs. He said almost all the overseas media coverage - which made up the bulk of the media interest - was positive.

Rolando, you are more than welcome to debate the perceived negatives in this thread but I think you will find they are personal opinions and most of them filmed in sepia would say "I know coffee"

oh how I laughed when I read this last night. If any member of the Schirato family, or a rep from Cantarella bros wants to come here and break down the experiences and perceptions many have of their coffee products Id be happy to hear it.

Perhaps theyd also care to explain their death grip on restaurants, in particular many who are highly regarded in certain "Good Food Guides".

Funny one of our Guide *** restaurants has just changed brands and has been surrounded on the footpath in the last two weeks by gaudy "windbreaks" (BS advertising as they have no tables outside anyway), just makes me less inclined to go there now the coffee has gone down market from what was a fairly good Coffee Supreme blend.

    I couldnt disagree more.

This style of advertisement is pretty common in the states at the moment. Its not hard-hitting, in your face, ram the brand down peoples throat style of advertising. Its simple brand awareness stuff. Theyve got a tremendously popular actor casually chatting about the brand. The ads not made for you and I or the average Australian, its for Americans and I reckon its a winner.

Ive spent a lot of time (especially recently) in the states and while a large proportion of the country is stuck in drip coffee, an awful lot of people drink espresso based drinks at some extremely good cafes, especially in NYC, Washington, Boston etc along the east coast. Its not all Starbucks and drip-a-lators.
