? - it correlates with the stories you hear.

Interesting looking at the numbers - the espresso price has a fair correlation to the score but the cap price is flat. *Also, in the top half of the list the spro & cap mostly cost the same but milk adds ~40c in the bottom half. * If you had to do it, it would be a tough decision - yes, youre getting a better spro but feeling ripped-off would sour the deal a bit. *::)

Would love to know which GJs they reviewed, though if Im honest it doesnt surprise me with some of the coffees Ive had at other GJ stores.

    Care factor 0
I cant think of the last time I went to any of them if ever with most of them. Also if they only went to one of each then it is really down to the Barista skills or lack of, secondly the store manager for not generally having a clue to keep the Barista up to spec and not the necessarily the brands fault.

Time to up the price on my Espressos too $2 singles or doubles ;)

One of my first jobs was at Michelles Patisserie, and i must say that for a chain store their attention to quality and freshness of food etc was very high, plus they made sure that all the franchisees were fully trained and regularly checked that all staff knew what they were doing. I can say from experience that they always made sure the grinder was clean, that he machine was cleaned regularly and that the grind was checked throughout the day. maybe it was just the store i was at that was so exacting... but i am not surprised that they got the highest ranking (for a chain).

that said, their coffee blend really is targeted at your average coffee drinker, so i personally find it a little to mild...

My understanding from another article was that the coffee itself was tested not the coffee in the store to give these results.

Re: Choice ranks Australias coffee chains

Ive found choice useful for a few things, but I find reading their coffee articles is usually frustrating for one reason or another...
such as in this months article - criticism of one place because a barista didnt use a thermometer. If that particular coffee wasnt hot enough, maybe there was an issue, but they basically said that all baristas MUST use a thermometer, like its not possible to learn to judge the temp based on feel and sound...
And their frequent espresso machine tests, where they use supermarket coffee, because apparently thats what people will be buying ::) without giving any advice to choose fresh beans instead for better results, and then decide that the best machine is a cheapie (since its pressurised baskets are able to compensate for the stale coffee). End result people will go and buy a lower grade machine based on trusting their dodgy recommendations, when the review should really advise that prosumer machines can produce much better results than entry level ones if you use decent beans

The reality about Choice is that "Snobs" of any variety are not their target audience. They cater for the everyday person who wants the basics cheaply.

If you are ignorant, but want high quality, then Choice is very difficult reading. (This is often me!)

If you are knowledgeable, then Choice is often laughable.
