Best cups + where to get them

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey all,

So I was looking to buy some real nice cups, and was wondering what ones you guys think I should get.

I was thinking the 160mL ACF Tulips, but ideally Id like to get something closer to the 200mL mark, while still retaining the tulip shape, and still being top quality.

Any other brands I should be considering? And wheres best to buy the ACF / Suggested cups from? Im in Brisbane, and Im after half a dozen. (as a side note, if anyone else is after half a dozen Id be happy to split an order of a dozen if that works out best!)

    Thanks all,
    ~M

    **edit**
On second thoughts, I could go either way with Tulip or not Tulip, I know ACF have a 200mL/190mL round cup... both are tempting. So yeh, has to be excellent quality, and 160-200mL

ACFs are very symbolically linked to coffee, but Im not sure that theyre the best :) Comes down to personal preference.

Rockingham do a fantastic tulip 180mL http://www.dibartoli.com.au/product/Rockingham_Cups which is 20mL bigger than the ACF. Plenty of cafes that Ive been to use rockingham, and I personally think theyre as good as ACF (which I own).

Pioneer coffee still use Rockinghams I think.

In regards to opinion on tulip vs non-tulip, I think the tulips look nicer, but in terms of drinking, I find theyre pretty much the same.

I was at Venezianos this afternoon looking at the Rockingham cups, and they didnt seem as thick / smooth as the ACF cups they had there.

Those pictures on the Di Bartoli site however look thicker than the ones I was checking out this afternoon.

    Hmmmm, decisions decisions...

I often find that ACFs are not well-finished - the glaze not covered fully, etc.

I love the pastel cappucino cups though!

I would tend to agree. I have 18 ACF cups (12x Long Black / Cappuccino and 6x tulip espresso). The glaze quality can vary between them and there are a couple with what looks like a score mark around the lip. Overall it does not impact the cup and you need to be looking to pick up on it.

Other than that I think they are great. They hold the heat well and are very robust .... often surviving a fall or a decent knock. Very happy with the purchase (now that I have forgotten the cost :o).

    Cheers

Hmmm, okay, thanks for all your help!

I think youve swayed me (mainly the bit about ACF not being well finished, Id never heard that, but after a bit more research it seems like its not too uncommon :S), and unless someone has a really good reason not to, Ill be placing an order in the morning for:

    80mL Espresso Cup (Orange) x 2
    180mL Long Black Cup (Brown) x 4
    200mL Cappuccino Cup (Red) x 4

All Rockingham. In Rockingham we trust.
Thought since the site lets me order single units, may as well get a bit of everything, cover all bases! Also, definitely a lot cheaper than ACF which is nice. 10 cups + saucers delivered is only $137.50, not too shabby at all.

Thanks again for your help, very positive result from first post on CS! Ill have to do this more often :P

Soon, youll be hooked. I think if you provide enough info, most people are lovely and keen to help.

We all had to start somewhere!

I have picked up some odd ACFs at the op shop now and again...

I got some rockingham tulips off dennis the first day he opened the syvania store for a really good price.
    Top cups.*

I also bought a few loose rockingham espresso cups from Bondi in different colours and they mix and match great! Brown yellow and red are perfect (although I just broke my red one this week* >:( )
Just need to find a blue from somewhere that sells separately.

By the way... the rockingham espresso cups seem to be thicker and look WAY better quality than the last few ACFs I got.

Rockingham China and their parent company Andrew Hawley Ltd are indeed New Zealand companies. But nowhere on either of their sites can I find anything that says where the products are actually made. I guess you could always contact them via their web page(s) and ask.

Okay, thank you for your prompt replies. I guess it shouldnt really matter where they are made as long as the quality is comparable to brands where quality and longevity are renown.

The problem with the ACF is I only want 2 sets, not 6. The other option is I buy 6 sets and sell what I dont want to keep.

If you are getting the black 58N as per Commercial non-sponsor link removed or
    http://www.coffee-a-roma.com.au/shop/en/accessories-3/cups-37/black-acf-cups-39/acf-black-58n-cappuccino-220ml-111.html

then I may have another person who wants two as well.

are you in the melb area to avoid the addition of postage costs. Split 3 ways, the cups work out to $33 plus postage - looking at maybe $40 t0 42 for a pair.

Im in Langwarrin - or just pay the 33.3 each to include the shipping I had a laugh and Ill pick em up from you - I go as far as Caulfield for my work - but Camberwell is on another planet for me. An extra $3 wont hurt us considering the pain endured to travel there.

Nuova Point makes nice cups too. I dont know how easy to find they are in ozzie coffee specialty shops, and i assume price would be comparable to ACF, but worth looking for as theyre well made and hold heat very well

Im happy to pick up from Camberwell and save us the $10, will give me an excuse to visit some of my favourite cafes :)

I may have some spare time on Thursday or Friday to buy them. If so, then you can pick them up from my place in Frankston after then.

Personally, I think one of the most appealing things about a freshly shot coffee is the colour, so Ive never understood why so many people want a cup that obscures colour. The double wall glasses made by Bodum are fabulous; they keep the cups hotter longer, and you can see the coffee colour in all its splendor.

Maybe its tradition of having your coffee served in a nice ceramic cup, or maybe its the look were after. I have some nice Bodum double wall Pavinas for short blacks. Yours are also great for keeping cold drinks cold.

Thanks to TimmyC, Ive had my ACF cups for a few weeks now and Im very happy with them.* Initially all of them in the 6 pack had fine markings, like scratches, etc.* But the marks must have only been on the surface, because with normal use and washing (with a nylon scourer) they are now 100% blemish free!* The glazing on these cups is of the highest of quality - hard, smooth, glossy and resilient.* Worth their money!

I am after some ACF cups.

Problem is I want 2 of a few different types, and I live over in Western Australia so there arent as many people over this side that I can easily split a 6 set with.

They look amazing and I already have a set of the pastel acf cups which I love.

Not sure if I should just bite the bullet and slowly work up a collection of them or just hold out and see if acf come out with a combo pack! (if only)

    Hi Gary,

I know that sponsor Coffee-A-Roma do multicolour sets http://www.coffee-a-roma.com.au/shop/en/acf-cups-56/coloured-acf-cups-69/ and Genovese definitely have a variety of colours open on their shelves- so they may sell individuals as well.

It might be worth contacting them to see if they can do anything for you.

    Good luck!

    Chris
