When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

I am ashamed to admit, but this morning I came very close to drinking...INSTANT coffee* :(

As I had been sick for the past few days, I wasnt able to keep my supplies of fresh beans stocked up and had just run out. I was craving a morning coffee, but the only coffee in the house was nescafe blend 43. I even had the tin out, ready to crack it open.

"it cant be THAT bad" I thought to myself...

Only when i looked at the gaudy tin, in front of my equipment which represented my coffee drinking passion did I come around to my senses..."I cant do it"* my mind conceded as my tastebuds rejoiced at the news.* I waited it out, and got some freshly roasted beans after I finished my morning work.* well worth the wait

Disaster averted...has this happened to you? when have you been tempted to drink instant?

For those who didnt know, you can easily make your own instant coffee at home, please see attached picture.

You will need, one spoon, one cigarette lighter, one pencil (preferably unpainted) and a sharpening device, too easy.

I look like a w@$%er when my family ask me if Id like a coffee, and I say no. What, our coffee not good enough for you? Well, no, its not. It has a similar colour to coffee, but thats about it.

I remember when I was at Uni, I used to try all the different jars of instant to find one that matched my tastes, and I did stick with one type for a few years. But now... I cant go back. Theres too much water under that bridge. :(

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

    Try standing on a freezing football field with your kids at 7am on a windy saturday morning;

    Try going to a motorcycle only swap meet at 7 am on a freezing and windy sunday morning;

    Try not to be rude with your hosts when they have offered you the only coffee they have and value, during your visit with them;

Try going without when there is NO alternative and you have to feed that caffeine withdrawal headache.

Just four examples and I am sure there are plenty more. Tthe first two you will beg for that $1.00 cup of instant in a foam takeaway cup just to warm you up a bit, the third you will accept because it is terribly unbecoming to be an appalling snob in the (derogatory sense of the word) with your hosts, and the fourth because thats just the way it is especially when the headache pills didnt work......

Remember the same rules apply to instant as everything else which is you can make it well, or you can make it badly. It isnt that bad when it is made well, its just a different wet hot brown beverage competing with a miriad of others. And of course there are good and bad instants....your choice.

Never say never, and it all depends on the situation guys* it all depends on the situation ;)* *

    Try...
Or going to a National roasting competition with hundreds of coffees nearby, yet stuck in your hotel room awake at 6am, thinking, as you open two sachets of instant coffee, and a sachet of sugar, I wonder if I can make an espresso out of this.

Attilio* been there (all 4) and NOT done that, the answer for me is tea bag tea or maybe something they call hot chocolate (if available) in that horrible little foam cup, yeah I know you can burn your mouth and still not warm your hands :( :( :( it really is a crying shame !!!!

Some people I know think that Im CRAZEEE and also that I dont drink coffee except when out at coffee shop

Its just that suffering the terrible nausea and headache*from every instant coffee Ive sampled is not worth it. What is it in instant that has this YUCK woozy effect? Feels like travel sickness - OMG just thinking about it makes me feel ill, Is it just very stale coffee?

What are the good instants?, my mum buys an organic decaf from health food shop Ive not been game enough to sample it , hmm?

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

Not quite instant but the other day I was at a friends and they have Vittoria pre-ground, I thought well why not, I want to see what everyone raves about that wont try my coffee. My opinion, not really nice. I took some of mine over (Ghimbi) after and made that up, the opinion was, its ok, not as strong as I like it.

I will drink instant coffee, but must be 50/50 with sugar. I will only drink it if tea isnt available though.

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

*tempted* to drink instant? not once since mid 2005. but I will drink it in Attilios example 3 - at friends houses when everyones having coffee, theres no credit in being a snob and turning up your nose at what theyre offering...
with the right combination of milk and sugar it can be an ok drink if I dont allow myself to compare it to real coffee

Last time I had instant coffee was sailing back from Flinders Island on the Matthew Flinders just before the ship got out of the shelter of Flinders Island and into Bass strait. Sick as a dog and havent been able to face instant since.

    Hmmm.... ::)

Long, long time ago when I had run out of my favourite, freshly roasted beans, and no access or hope of getting any as I was in the middle of a remote part of a PNG jungle... It almost killed me but there was nothing else to drink :( :P

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

I think I would rather die than drink instant. The last time I had it I had a bitter taste for about an hour or two and swore never to have it again.

When I cant get decent coffee I drink tea, beer, wine or water, but not instant.

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

Never tempted to drink Instant but am happy with a Coffee Bag when real coffee is not available. I carry a supply of them with me everywhere. My refusal to drink Instant is well known and friends offer me tea or a Coffee Bag. Some might say Coffee bags are just as bad as Instant, but they work for me.

You wake up, pull on your clothes and boots. There is a cracking noise as you undo the tent fly and the grass snaps as you walk on it. You look at the dam on the neighbouring property and it is frozen. You get to the fire as the hangover starts kicking in and your mates offer you a tin cup with steam wafting off the contents. Believe me, you really dont care if it is instant. :)

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

    Sometime in the 1980s.

I discovered that instant, even the "best" instant, gives me instant headaches that last for hours, and at that point I gave it up completely and have never been tempted since.

I dont think Ive ever had a headache from real coffee--as far as I know. A couple of times Ive had coffee in expensive conference venues where I was assured it was NOT instant, and the headache proved the staff to be liars (or maybe just misinformed >:( ). Once this happened when I was the principal guest speaker, and I just went home before my talk the headache was so bad!

Now, I VERY RARELY drink coffee I havent seen made.

Er... I still drink instant every now and then but then its not a real coffee is it?
So its not really fair to compare the two IMHO.

Its like Kopi lollies.. its coffee flavoured but then you wouldnt call it solidified coffee.

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

I went back to instant for a couple of months, and found some nice variety and things did not taste bad after a week or so. Then I made a moka pot cup for the first time in two months and boy was I blown away by it.

Instant is not the devil that everyone says it is, assuming you get the right instant, I had to experiment a bit before finding something that did not give me gass and make me want to puke, and I settled on Timms.

Instant, however, is not coffee, as someone else had pointed out, it does not even come 1/100000000 close to a Moka Pot cup let alone a well made espresso.

I used to drink instant at work for convience as it did not take long. There are no coffee shops of any value nearby. I have now converted to cup of soups as they taste better and I only drink espresso at home. :D

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

With family or friends Im more than happy to drink instant when it is given. In those instances it is more about the social gathering than what beverage is being consumed anyway. I dont actually mind the taste, it certainly doesnt taste like real coffee, but if people wanted real coffee, then they would buy it.

Most recently reduced to instant in Tunisisa - handed it by a UN worker doling out drinks to 30 thousand refugees fleeing from Libya. But heres the thing... once I got into Libya and was driving from Tobruk to the war front near Ajdabiyah, we stopped at this tiny concrete bunkhouse in the middle of the desert... they sold cigarettes, a few plain biscuits and (thank you Lord) golden creamy espresso coffee out of an immacualtely maintained Italian machine. About 40 cents (and petrol was 9 c a litre!). Next time someone asks what did the Romans ever do for us? I know what to say!

Whenever I hear of offers to do horrible stuff for money, I am reminded of the old quote usually attributed to George Bernard Shaw (sometimes Churchill):
GBS: Madam, would you sleep with me for a million pounds?
Actress: My goodness, Well, Id certainly think about it.
GBS: Would you sleep with me for a pound?
Actress: Certainly not! What kind of woman do you think I am?!
GBS: Madam, weve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.
Instant - No price is enough!

Re: When have you been tempted to drink INSTANT?

Ive just had some of the Di Bella Torq Instant Espresso turn up yesterday as ordered, so I took it into work today to use as my instant. Not bad at all, really!

Otherwise, I drink a Jarrah Vienna instant coffee to give me a kick first thing in the morning as Im switching my machine on. It doesnt even purport to taste like coffee, really and theres only a little it in it, so Im not sure if that counts or not? I mainly just need a bit of a kick when I get out of bed at 5.00am because Im immediately into making kids lunches, getting myself ready, etc and just cant hang out for the 20-30 minutes until my machine is up to temp.

Buy yourself a timer and set it to turn the machine on 30 minutes or so before you get out of bed.

Used to do it, then the silly timer reset itself and I couldnt be fagged spending the time trying to program it again... Vienna does me okay. Its probably not that safe to let me at a machine before Ive got some sort of caffeine in my system, anyway! :o

See if you can find one that just has plastic pegs inserted in a dial to turn it on and off.

On a Jetstar flight when you purchase their $2.50 coffee half way through a Perth to Sydney stretch due to a caffeine withdrawal headache.. and they rock up with a cup of hot water and a Nescafe sachet.

The last time I had instant was multiple decades ago while in the service and out in the boonies in the middle of nowhere with nothing but C-Rats to eat for far longer than I care to remember. It was either drink the instant coffee provided with the rats (Jazzed up with the included sugar, powdered creamer, and, if you were lucky enough to have gotten a rat with it in it, a pouch of powdered hot chocolate.) or go through withdrawals. It was a close call which was the worse fate! Drinking the instant won out as it helped you choke down the canned scrambled eggs.

To those who say they drunk instant when the caffine withdrawals start to kick in, I have two words for you:

    Red Bull!

Thats my go to drink when I have run out of beans or start craving caffine. Its no espresso, but it sure beats the hell out of instant on the taste front!

To those who say they drunk instant when the caffine withdrawals start to kick in, I have two words for you:

    Red Bull!

Thats my go to drink when I have run out of beans or start craving caffine. Its no espresso, but it sure beats the hell out of instant on the taste front!
    I dunno.
Memory tells me this stuff has a warning on the can advising not to drink more than 2 a day.
If I really needed the caffeine, Id probably look for caffeine tablets ahead of energy drinks.

Last time I drank instant was at the 15th hour mark of a night shift (3:30 am) Lots of sugar, three teaspoons. Saved my life. There are very few times I will consider it, but it has its time and place.

To be honest, faily often, im a snob, i have thousands of dollars of coffee gear, i roast my own everytime, wont drink coffee out unless its from a reputable cafe, and im very anal in my home roasting quality, but i will have an instant or bag when ever real coffee isnt available, i love great coffee, but sometimes i just need the hit :) :P

    Tempted? Or Forced?

I got a Robert Timms coffee bag free in the mail once when they were new, I suppose I was "tempted" to try it - but thats not really instant, more of a half instant half preground. Work provides free tea/coffee but Ive got my Aeropress here and my Sunbeam at home. Theres some ground coffee in the freezer which seems to work fine with the Aeropress so thats what I use if Im desperate.

Granted, only a few years ago I had no idea why people would pay $3-4 for coffee in a cafe when it was so cheap from the tin, other than to get a frothy cappuccino (in my mind, the chocolate sprinkle was the selling point) and look like a wanker. Mind you, on the rare occasions Id had one the coffee was probably lousy, much like it still is in most cafes, so it did little to change my opinion. I think it was 2009 when I started getting coffee from a local cafe near work (quality is variable on barista and time of day, but was generally pretty good) and I finally discovered what real coffee tastes like.

Yep.. you guys are snobs :D

Tempted? Early starts when I just cant get out of the office to grab a coffee. Also a "good" instant can make an excellent iced coffee... skim milk, a generous scoop of ice cream and a couple of ice cubes... to be enjoyed with a frozen tim tam... mmmmmmm!

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
When you look in the back of the cupboard for the jar of Nescafe, only to find that the 1/4 full contents have this wierd looking fuzzy green aura - think it might have been there for a while !
