Prices of coffee drinks around Australia?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im wondering if people could share how much they pay for their daily cup (or charge) and is it value for money? I know prices differ cafe to cafe and especially in different states. Eg- I pay $3-$3.50 depending on the generosity of the barista since Im a regular for a 9/10 cappuccino IMO. ($4 for a non-regular).

If its great coffee then it is value for money. There are a few variables that determine great coffee from a cafe but quality is of greatest importance. On the few occasions I dont drink my own home-roasted I will pay about $3.50 for a short or long black.

Currently paying $3.8 for a small double-shot flat white. (Orange Bean, Belconnen, ACT).

Used to pay $2.90 (prepaid card of 12 for $33, else regular cost $3.3) for a Medium FW at another place, but they got a new guy on the machine and coffee went to poo. getting 8/10 coffees with overdone milk. The general attitude behind the machine was just slap dash. (No I didnt bother complaining - comes down to, these people are touching my food, they get pissed off, who knows what bodily fluid might be added).

I currently pay about 49.17c per coffee, not including the machine or my own time, which Im writing off as a hobby...

At church I charge $2ea for a "standard" (smallish) capp / latte, labour is free, and that makes them a nice little markup for donating to (at the moment) the local foodbank.

At work its "free", although I have to turn up :)

For a while the high end of prices in quality cafes here in Melbourne was about $3.50, but over the past few months a few of our leading cafes have pushed up to $3.80.

The majority are still around $3.50, though.

As for most expensive (and im talking quality places, not restaurants that often charge ridiculous amounts for poor coffee), i think the highest ive seen recently is $4 at Market Lane (although they use expensive milk).

As for being value for money, if its quality coffee its well worth the money, be it $3.50 or $3.80.

Herald Sun had an article in 23/11 paper re the cost of a cup of coffee in 5 capital cities. "Cafes Pocket profits as consumers spend up for perfect brew". (Karen Collier)

20/11 Herald Sun "Somebody say "peak coffee"? oh god, its real. (Peter Farquahar)

On Herald Sun website (search) now to read if you wish.

Are you spending $232 per year to get your coffee kick? .

Hah....Id hate to have to pick up the freight tab on beans- be they green or brown if I lived in your neighbourhood Iain.

Remember how much post was on your grinder? :-? Galumays Pompeii was :o :o :o in comparison and it weighed in at just over the mass of a bag of greens...

$5 in the sticks sounds pretty fair to me if its well executed....

Have to agree with Talk_Coffee - freight into Darwin really drives up prices for places that want consistency and reliability of supplies. The NT isnt remote if you airfreight everything!
Add the impost of paying higher wages to keep permanent staff happy enough to make sure they stay with you and youll find not many cafes make much "profit" from a $4-5 coffee.

Especially in the Wet when turnover is dramatically lowered.

They arent really charging tourist prices, it just seems that way.

btw- I added this comment for the benefit of CSers that visit rather than residents like iaindb.

Depending on the cafe, prices usually range between $3.50 to $4.00 for a flat white/long black in Perth. The most expensive ive seen is at Epic with prices over $4.

    The sticks?!

And "well executed"... Im not satisfied with my own coffee, let alone anyone elses in Darwin.

yeah, sometimes its fair to see a higher price here in here, sometimes its not. Like my 4x4 tyres that are $200 in Sydney and someone wanted to charge me $400 here :o

If I can make a coffee for around 50c using "boutique" or gourmet beans, including milk, Im sure a shop could sell it for $3? How much would you account for wages, rent, equipment, and profit? $2.50?

Maybe I should start roasting commercially... damn that 10kg Has just sold :D

Darwin is indeed very much the sticks when it comes to freshly roasted, quality coffee. The is one guy who sells what is supposed to be the good stuff at the markets in Parap. The problem with his coffee is that he sells roasted beans from open coffee bags in tropical temperatures.

Then there is Parap fine foods, who sell so called top quality coffee for prices into the high $50s. Never mind that these hight quality coffees are stored in clear Perspex containers in quantities that clearly dont get sold quickly. And lets not mention the tropical temperatures.

I lived in Darwin for quite some years and fresh coffee is simply not an option unless you roast it yourself.

Hopefully this will change in the future, but at present, it is still pretty sad.
