Starbucks removes cochineal from their products

In the Age today there is a short report on how Starbucks is responding to its customers (who ran an online petition) by removing cochineal from its products, namely Strawberry Frappuccinos (as well as their baked goods)

Personally, I think you have bigger issues to worry about if your drink of choice is a Frappuccino ;D

    Whats wrong with cochineal?
A little bug guts hurt no one and it has to be better than a factory created colour and certainly better than the canned whipped cream on top.

Cochineal is a natural red dye produced by an insect that lives on Prickly pear.

The insects and Prickly pear came here to Sydney on the First Fleet in 1788.

The insects died out but the Prickly pear flourished and became a very prickly problem weed in NSW and Queensland, until the Cactoblastis beetle helped to bring it under control.

To satisfy vegan customers, Starbucks will be using a tomato-based product to colour their red and pink drinks and foods, which is OK providing the tomato growers dont kill any insects biting their tomatoes.

Damned ridiculous! As Barry alluded to: how many bugs are killed by sprays etc so the fruit and veges look good.

I reckon they can do what they want (they bear the risk). If the market can tell the difference (or simply finds out theyre doing it), and the market cares they wont buy the pink disgraces. And to be fair to the more serious vegans (i.e. not those ones patronising Starbucks)....some of them do at least try to purchase food produced in a manner less likely to have caused indirect impacts on insects/rats/dinosaurs (I have friends whose house is finished with vegan paint).
