    New grinder advice please

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi Members
I have a new Rancilio Silvia and now need to compliment it with a grinder
    My max budget is $550
This grinder will help serve up 2 double espresso,s and 2 latte,s per day and 4 decaf latte,s a week
I am 66 yo, have a budget and therefore a desire for long lasting equipment. NO upgradeitis for me.
additionally I have started to get involved in roasting my own, probably with a popcorn maker, at least for now
your advice on a best match for the Silvia to get the best out of he above would be appreciated
    Cheers

For that price, you could pair your Silvia with a Rocky and have a full Rancilio Setup.

Failing that, the Compak K3 should be in that price range also, Depends on which you prefer, both are not gonna need exchanging/replacing any time soon, and are pretty much commercial gear in a home-size

I have to second the K3 range, i have never owned a Rocky so i can comment. But if you have a budget of $550 i would be spending up to the $550 and be getting a Compak K3.
There is plenty of information on here about them and other grinders.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Thank you both. Have checked out the sponsors sites. I think the compak. Am now mulling over whether to make it a Touch or a Push. I assume the Touch is a bit better. Maybe the Sponsors will deal.

    Hi Graeme,

The K3 push is just a K3 touch minus the (not brilliant) analogue timer. I think it offers brilliant bang for buck.

As for the timer- I just don't rate and the only reason you'd buy one would be for the bling of the polished aluminium variant K3T- not for the timer itself.

My advice would be to save your hard-earned and put it towards the green beans or whatever roaster will follow the popper.

    Hope that helps.

    Chris

The touch allows you to set a grind time to set the dose eg 20 seconds, the push is just grind on demand push to grind push to stop I think

I can vouch for the K3.

Owning one for over a year now and it most importantly produces a great cup of coffee through a good quality grind. Better than rocky for sure.

Got mine from Dimmatinas for around that price and certainly great value. Will keep most people happy for years.

Thank you to all. I have sent a message to Chris at Talk Coffee to discuss a purchase of the push. Thanks for your advice

Did you upgrade from the Rocky to the K3? What is the K3's biggest advantage over the Rocky?

I got the K3 Touch that has the steel look to match the Rancilio Silvia

For a start it looks nicer than the Rocky. The Rocky looks more agricultural compared to the K3. The Rocky is very solid, but so is the K3.

The biggest advantage is the quality of the grind. It is similar in grind quality to the Mazzer Mini or the Macap for example, but certainly superior to the Rocky and better than the Breville Smart Grinder which you can notice in the cup.

Whatever you decide, don't skimp on the grinder. As with most things get the best what you can afford, and if it means waiting a bit longer, then it may be worth it, and perhaps cheaper in the long run. True value for money does not mean getting the cheapest.
Better to wait and spend a little more and be happy with it rather than spend little and be unhappy with it.

    How so?

Read the Titan's thread over at HB where the Rocky equalled the Robur in some respects and the Mazzer Mini was a long way off?

Who to believe, the age old issue with forums.

So you went from Rocky to K3T?

I'm trying to ascertain it it's a worthwhile upgrade or a bit of a side-grade for the Rocky.

Go the Compak K3P from site sponsor Talk Coffee for $450. The timer function on the K3T is gimmicky and pretty much useless if you are adjusting for beans ageing over a few days.
Save the money and you'll have a great stepless grinder for a very good price.

I upgraded from a Rocky to a K3 Touch. The difference was instantly tangible with better shots right from the start. Eighteen months later, no regrets at all. The K3Touch will look nicer with the Silvia, but really, the timer is a waste of time.

I own both the Rocky and the K3 Touch. The Rocky does a great job at work and the K3 a better job at home. Like others earlier in this thread I think the touch component is fairly gimmicky and ineffective. Main reason being that when operated in this mode a large number of grinds don't make it into the portafilter. Having said that if you want to grind a large amount of coffee in one go into a container e.g for a camping weekend away you just hit the touch function about 20 times or so and out it comes. Disclaimer : This of course would be committing one of the 7 deadly coffee sins of not not grinding fresh coffee on demand. You're goin' straight to hell for that one......
