Coffee addiction: Do people consume too much caffeine?

US officials are investigating the safety of caffeine in snacks and energy drinks, worried about the "cumulative impact" of the stimulant - which is added to a growing number of products. Is our tea and coffee-fuelled society too dependent on the world's favourite drug?

The bubbling kettle, the aroma from the mug, the first bitter mouthful of the morning.

It's a ritual without which the working day would be, for millions of people, frankly horrifying.

Caffeine is, according to New Scientist, the planet's most popular "psychoactive drug." In the United States alone, more than 90% of adults are estimated to use it every day.

But now even the US - home of Coca-Cola, Starbucks and the 5-Hour Energy shot - is questioning the wisdom of adding it to everyday foodstuffs like waffles, sunflower seeds, trail mix and jelly beans.

I had six espressos yesterday - (half of those at MICE!) - is that too much?

Yes it is especially if you were like many people at exhibitions, working on an empty stomach for most or all of the day.

The coffee intake doesn't concern me so much in regards to society's habits, however energy drinks are a different story.

I do like energy drink, mainly for the taste as I find they don't increase my energy at all. I don't drink them often but may sometimes buy a V or mother or something. When I see like 12 year old kids with 500ml energy drinks, often more than once, that concerns me.

It can't be good for a growing body in any way, or any body really, but I feel as though some of those kids might regret their choices later in life. However sometimes the kids just see their family and friends drinking them so feel pressured to have them too, so sometimes it's not always the kids fault directly.

In a related note, a girl I went to school with usually had 2 500ml rockstar energy deinks a day, no way that can be good. Mid last year she fell pregnant with twins but they passed away 2 weeks after birth. Perhaps the caffeine, sugar and additive intake had something to do with this, I dunno but I cant help but dwell on it.

Caffeine loaded energy drinks consumed in conjunction with alcohol is a concern in terms of alcohol-linked violence and anti-social behaviour.
A police officer friend recently expressed the view that the 'energy drinks' keep the punters partying hard when the amount of alcohol they have consumed should have shut them down long ago.
Of course caffeine is not the only drug being used in this context.

I tend to agree though I have a different perspective on the problem, I don't see it as being a case of the "keep[ing] the punters partying hard", there's a more basic issue.

Mixing uppers and downers is just a *really* bad idea, screws with your brain chemistry in a really bad way, hell even Ozzy Osborne has managed to figure this one out...
