I was just reading this article today:
"Disease Outbreak Threatens the Future of Good Coffee"
Disease Outbreak Threatens the Future of Good Coffee
"A disease called coffee rust has reached epidemic proportions in Central America, ... snipped bits ... Regional production fell by 15 percent last year, putting nearly 400,000 people out of work, and that’s just a taste of what’s to come. The next harvest season begins in October, and according to the International Coffee Organization, crop losses could hit 50 percent."
It loos like there are a number of factors that have contributed to the situation from climate change, higher density crops, growing trees in more sunlight, and more use of homogeneous varietals.
If the predicted crop losses occur I'd think it would effect what Andy could source as I'm sure the big chains that sell coffee have supply contracts locked in for years.
Some more reading re leaf rust:
It will affect supply and it will affect price but I'd hazard a guess that we'll still see some great coffee on BeanBay from affected areas. ;-)
