    Hi,
    I am completely new to this....not sure how i got into coffee snobbery as of yet, but all i can say, I am an owner of a last Bacchi that last one left at Di Bartoli and liking it already, getting better all the time.

    OK its not a 'real machine with bells and whistles, but I'm really curious when you folks talk of PIDing the single boilers (Silivas and similar) what the heck do you mean, is this for controlling temperature or pressure? you say it everywhere and I'm not sure what you're really talking about.
    please explain away the mystery...

    The P.I.D process is a precise mathematical way of controlling an electro-mechanical device.
    I.e boiler element, solenoids, flow valve ,etc.

    In this case a boiler element.
    The smart electronic controller compares the current temperature of the boiler water to the target temperature. and through a lot of complex maths equations. ( university level calculus) the controller determines how long to apply power to the boiler element to achieve and then maintain that temperature.
    Its constantly monitoring / comparing and calculating.
    But. The process and controller is only as good as the programming.
    Bad programming can cause the boiler to take a long time to reach its target temperature and also not achieve a stable/ consistent temperature.

    Also, the addition of PID Control to a process, need not be an expensive one as basic, reasonable quality of control can be had for a surprisingly small investment of money and time...

    Welcome Grummer,

    Continue to learn to use your Bacchi....they are a superb piece of equipment...if a little fiddly while learning how they work. I only use mine when I head bush for a break, but the quality of the coffee is just as good as what I get from my e61 home machine. You can't PID a Bacchi...and you don't need to....you control the heat from below and the extraction rate from the tap.

    PID is a mathmatical way of controlling the boiler element in your espresso machine to adjust the temperature precisely to brew with precision.....

    Target brew temperature is not the same as your boiler temperature due to thermal gain/loss when contacting brass/copper and steel parts that include your grouphead and other metals in contact.....

    Therefore when getting PID'ed we snobs call it Remember to compensate the boiler temperature with the thermal loss/gain in mind to get the right temps....

    HI Folks, thanks heaps to explain away that lill mystery, I geddit!!, yes the Bacchi is completely manual and yes but fiddly but its fun....and 'surfing temperture'. comparing to timing of the '6-6 and 1/2 minutes'...also I can see how Bacchi illustrates, 'scaling/de-scaling' as you'd actually SEE the barrel (boiler)...and its dimensional aspect as 'perfect engineering' with no computers/knobs cheats (except the release valve for the very end stage, as in 'the pouring'...
