    Jobs in coffee shops

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I've been looking for work on Gumtree, as well as other web sites. I notice there seems to be a few jobs for Barristas. What sort of course do you need to do to be a Barrista? Does it take a long time for such a course and would a job service provider pay for it? Or could I easily get some other job in a coffee shop?

I got my Business Information Systems degree last year but I'm having a hard time looking for work.

    Thanks.

    Hi Pamount,

In general barista courses run for only a few hours and can be completed in the same day. It is a good starting point to get basic knowledge in the barista art.

Many cafes expect prior barista experience to be considered for a barista role

OK. I guess every role generally needs experience. How do you get experience after doing a barista course?

From personal experience, i started as a dishwasher, promoted to wait staff, practiced making coffee for personal consumption, making some for other staff members, barista for the day called in sick, got thrusted to run the coffee machine and the rest is history.

Get yourself into the industry in any way that you can.
If you have a passion for coffee and are willing to pick up what people put down, you will eventually be given time on the machine.
Practice, practice, practice. Even if it is after hours and out of your own pocket(materials wise).
You don't have to know everything because chances are, your employers(or fellow staff members) version of everything will be different.

If you out grow the place of employment, gracefully move on. Do not burn any bridges in the coffee industry because it will eventually come back to you.

pamount do you have any experience making coffee with an espresso machine?

I talked myself into an advertised barista job by convincing the cafe owner to let me make him a coffee.
I did have a piece of paper from a course but I also had plenty of practice at home on my own machine.

My demonstration was enough to prove I knew what I was doing.

In that case do what the others have said and try starting as a dishwasher and work your way up.
