    Bean storage in Qld

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

I have thrown away more half used bags of beans (or 1/3 or 1/4 remaining) than I care to remember, due to them going stale before they are finished. (250g bags)

I buy them from a roaster in Qld so they are fresh when I get them. Their recommendation is storage in the fridge after opening. They are supplied in a foil bag with a ziplock and vent.

Before I posted this, I used the search function to read previous discussions, hoping not to waste forum space on a question that has not doubt been discussed before.

This time, I stored them in a cool, dark place as much as is possible in Qld. I think it was an improvement on fridge storage in that I made it 90% of the way through the bag.

It will be 29C here today and a couple of days next week, 34C is predicted. I'm sitting on the fence as to the correct method to maximise bean life.

Thanks in advance for any input.

You say they are fresh, but how fresh exactly ? I roast my own, and beans are used up between 3-4 weeks. Stored in zip lock bags that are pricked then put inside foil bag with one way valve. Kept in coolish conditions, for QLD anyway, and find them OK. Do have to tighten the grind toward the end, but still drinking pretty well at 3.5 weeks old.
Never stored them in the fridge.

Roasted on the Gold Coast by a national coffee chain so, better than a supermarket. No roast date given, only a use by/best before date. That is probably half, or more, of the problem.

Probably not as fresh as they would be if bought from Bean Bay, so that's my next move.

    Thanks Seamad.

If I haven't roasted I'll grab some roasted beans from Silipo, they're on the Gold Coast, and would be fresher than what your getting I'd guess. There is also a roaster in Yatala I've had beans from which were good too.

A visit to Silipo is planned for tomorrow (Sat) for a coffee or two and a look at their machines.

    Thanks again Seamad.
