Did that $300 need to include a grinder as well?
How many of what kind of coffees a day would be made?

You should be able to get a lelit/nemox/quaha combi for that.

Or the Breville with built in grinder , bes840 I think?, as a second choice.

    Or the sunbeam 6910.

    All used of course.

    Cheers

$250 on a grinder and the balance on a French press.

    Espresso machine budget $300

A mate got his BES870 Breville Barista Express (built in grinder) new for $350.

If espresso only then I think Melbroaster mentioned Flair which looks like an ok manual espresso maker. Could get a milk frother on the side if that's your thing

Herzog's option is also a good one to spend that money on a grinder.

Plus they could pick up an aeropresss/French press/Mokka pot &/or find a garage sale /FB sale espresso machine for $10-$20. Will give them some idea of what they will likely get from the $100-$300 appliance machines.

I once bought a BES800 for $30. You could get that and a smart grinder for easily under $300.

As others have indicated you either need to be prepared to look at something second hand or just buy the best Breville or Sunbeam you can get for the price at the moment.
    Second hand options could include:
    - Gaggia Classic with a Sunbeam or Breville grinder
    - Breville BES920
    - Sunbeam EM7000
    - Rancilio Silvia V1 or V2
    - A combi unit like a Lelit or Nemox

    New options could include:
    - Breville BES840
    - Breville BES870 (combined machine/grinder)
    - Sunbeam EM6910

You'd have to really hunt around to find these machines new for that price, especially if you need a grinder as well. But it's worth a try.

Aeropress and a Lido grinder would be my choice

Mine too. It's not an espresso machine though.

Agreed- but a better result in the cup than some of the other options being offered up and at least he ends up with a good grinder and something that won't end up being put out for council pick- up in a few months

A second hand Europicolla wouldn't be much north of $300 for a reasonable buy. I got mine for $400 but it doesn't leave any budget for a grinder.

Given the very tight budget, I would go with a Lido and a decent Moka Pot/Stove Top coffee maker.
Not true espresso of course, but closer to it than an AeroPress and for me at least, I prefer a good Moka Pot brew over that of an AeroPress...

I'd buy an used BES870 for that budget, It has built in grinder, steaming is slow however its fairly easy to get good microfoam.
