If you were forced (perhaps by an angry terrorist), what supermarket beans to buy?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I live in China currently and the supply here is pretty limited- just humour me on this one!

Edit: Just to be clear - I mean which brand of beans, not which supermarket.

I don't know - the Chinese greens Andy has been getting recently have been pretty impressive – perhaps you should go on the hunt for a local supplier and a popper!

An electric popcorn popper. They should be widely available for not much money.

They sure do, albeit a bit quicker than some other methods available. There are some mods you can do to slow down the roast time if you decide on a popper though.

    Hi Latte,

Where abouts in China are you?

If you are in any of the major cities, you should easily be able to buy a popcorn maker, they roast nice coffee...I tried it a few years ago and posted on it, others have too I received a great deal of support and conversation on it too, you'll have to spend time and do a search for it....

I can't remember the complete details but I think I got a $15.00 or something like that popcorn maker from Target or some large store replaced the supplied plastic top with a home made top and chimney from an empty cleaned baked beans can and started to learn about roasting from there, you'll also need a colander or two for cooling the beans down...

Not sure where you can get your green beans from but I think they shouldn't be hard to find...

Here are some links to threads others have started that may be interesting and..I dare say, although I haven't looked there will be a few videos on youTube, if they let you watch it there.

    Popcorn Popper roast vs crema
    Popcorn roaster
    My first popper roast
    Target $16 popcorn maker
    My first popper roast

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

I looked into these a few years back. They were not available in Oz at the time, but in the US the consensus was that they didn't get hot enough to properly roast coffee. Some home roasters used them wih a turbo oven on top, but then they needed other mods to handle the higher temps.

I did find plenty of cheap hot air poppers, and did many successful roasts with them, but they all needed at least some modifications. The best results came from heavily modified poppers with variable control of heat and fan speeds.

Re your original question, there was a thread here on CS recently in which Aldi beans were preferred over most other supermarket offerings. https://coffeesnobs.com.au/general-c...highlight=aldi
