    Maths Help Please!!

I am currently doing some research for a book I am doing on coffee drinkers. I am trying to do a (very rough) calculation on how many cups of coffee are drunk in Australia annually.

Could somebody who knows far more about these sorts of things please check my assumptions and maths:-

60kgs Bags imported to Australia. 1.71m

Roasted Beans per 60kg Bag x 50.4kgs (using ICO ratio)

Total Roasted Beans Consumed 86.184m kgs

    Beans required per cup 7gms

    Total Cups. 12,312m cups
This suggests that every single Australian over the age of 16 drank an average of 640-odd cups of coffee in the year. Does this seem right? Obviously, it assumes single shot coffees and does not allow for wastage etc.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Cheers....Stuart

7gms per cup is not right if you're talking about cafe usage and even home. I would have said home usage is probably more like 12-14g

You omitted the number of people over 16. I infer it is 19m? That is about right then. 12 gigacups, 19 megapersons, 1.75 cups/day/each.

As we see here, many people put a lot more than 7g of beans into a single shot, so actual cup consumption will be lower, and there will be wastage. Do you know the coffee-drinking proportion of those over 16?

eta: you exclude pods, imported coffees not roasted or ground here? Is this green beans only?

A cafe owner will pop up and give their more accurate figures but I would have gone 20 grams per cup so 50 cups per kilo.

    Not ridiculous. Average coffee consumption you calculated = 640 x 7g = 4.48kg.
I don't consider myself a huge drinker but have 2 x doubles (18-20g) each morning which works out to roughly 14kg per year or about 3 x the average amount of coffee you calculated.
I know of many people who drink much more.

    Beensean,

thanks. You're right, I did omit the population 16+ years of age. You know your population numbers! Approximate current total is 19.2m (19,182,523). And yes, I am only including the green bean imports. I'm guessing, with no evidence, that if I took out wastage and assumed higher per cup coffee content and included pods and imported roasted beans, that they might roughly offset.

Somewhere around 75% of Australian adults drink coffee on a daily basis. So it's probably a little less when the 16-17 year olds are included.

Appreciate your taking time to respond. Great advice!

Don't forget that not everybody is drinking espresso based drinks. The yield will be different for other brewing methods. I use about 25g of coffee when I make a pour over in the V60, and that makes 1 largish cup. Plunger coffee will probably yield something similar to the OP's original prediction.

And some of the green beans imported become instant coffee (I think Nestle still do this up Gympie way) and some of that is exported.

Thanks everyone for the great, and very prompt, responses!

Clearly, the grams per cup quantity is, obviously, questionable @ 7gms per cup. It's a standard adopted by the International Coffee Organisation globally. Clearly, there are those like Saeco_user regularly drinking 'doubles', but I guess it's almost realistic to call these '2 cups'.

Interested to hear that cafe's regularly use significantly more than 7gms per cup, given I might have thought they would be less generous with their coffee content, given their need to 'make a buck'. To the totally uninformed (e.g. me) 20gms sounds a lot, but I'm happy to go with that unless someone argues strongly against that.

    Again, many thanks.
