    Borneo to be Wild

Daughter just returned from several weeks in Borneo and brought some beans back for me.
They were not bought with high expectations (which was just as well) but as a "curiosity".
I was forewarned upon opening the pack, by the overpowering aroma of oil and tar.
Upon inspection, the beans were the blackest beans I have ever seen.
I put a double basket through the machine for a Long-black and it was certainly the nastiest L-B I have ever tasted. Took about two glasses of water and a WOW L-B to get the taste out of my mouth and I can still smell the tar three hours later.
Still it says on the packet that they were "100% coffee" which dispels any lingering doubts that they were pellets harvested from the beach after the Exxon Valdez disaster.
It's good to see how the "other half" lives, although these beans may be something specially reserved for tourists.

I have a very similar story to tell about some keenly anticipated beans that were hand-delivered by the grower.

One wonders about the motivation to roast beans to this degree.
Intentional for some reason? Just ignorant? Bean is such rubbish they figure nobody will care? Local taste preference?

    Local taste preference mostly.

I get people (generally from eastern block countries) who tell me the last coffee they got was okay but I want a "strong coffee".
Their strong translates to as dark as both the above coffees.

We even do a custom roast for a commercial customer that's 100% robusta at least as dark as the above and they love it (while I shudder).

At least Paolo's surprise packet said dark roast on the front to give some sort of warning.

I have friends from Central and Eastern Europe who always ask for an espresso when they are at my home!
When I know they are coming over (usually a week or so notice), I will do a roast 20-25 seconds into second crack.

To me its way too bitter and ashy, as I like a lighter roast (dropped before 2nd crack) like most of us here.
But they love it, as they say; "it's the way coffee should be".

So never knock what you see, whats good for the goose is not anyways good for the gander.
