A Current Affair and Pod Machines

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Anyone watch it the other night?
Australian barista champion Craig Simon and A Current Affair were endorsing pod coffee. It's economical, from only 39c a cup, simple to use and best of all very nice too. How low can you go? I guess money talks.

''These offer the ability for me to go to a friend's house and accept a coffee that is better than instant,'' Simon says. You've got to laugh.

This might be the underlying reason

Sadly, ya cant eat/live on trophies, and, whilst being a (Champion barista) my gain you momentary fame in the industry, it counts for little in the real world.

Seems fair to say that a very large number of Australians use 'Pod coffee' when they drink coffee at home.
I would imagine there are more Pod machines in use than all other types of coffee devices combined.
(Aside from my CS friends, I don't know anyone who has an Espresso machine.)
If you are Barista champion and looking for a related sponsorship then Pod coffee is probably the obvious choice.
(would you be more comfortable flogging McDonalds or Coffee Club or Starbucks?)
As long as he doesn't try to tell me that Pod coffee is now as good as an Espresso he can knock himself out flogging Pods.

Wwwhaaaaaat... Craaaaig... very surprised by that... he is a legend in coffee, so incredibly dedicated to the craft and knows his stuff... unless they've done something dramaaatically different with these pods that's very surprising..

I don't think he says Pod coffee is the "ultimate coffee".
As I see it he basically says "This is good Pod coffee".
    I'm never going to know...

Haha yeah true . Just thought there would be sooo many other avenues open to him, which he has certainly gone for and done great things for specialty coffee, which is why I'm surprised he's approached the pod crowd (or has taken up someone else's offer to him)

... and I spent 18 months with a business in the West trying out all types of different pods trying to find one that did not taint the flavour of the coffee. The benchmark was better coffee than most cafes here and in Sydney & Melbourne. We succeeded (eventually) and that business is now thriving and is even exporting their pods all over the world. The final results meant that even light roasts came out "better than drinkable". Scary thought for CS'r's - three machines all rated at 1,000 pods per hour, pumping out a mere 550 nett per hour over a (long) working day and making so much profit that what I consider Perth's best air bed roaster is now used exclusively for their pod business and the old cafe is closed permanently. I cannot even get hold of my favourite roasts from that roaster any more as it is going close to 24/7 (with 4 shifts a day) exclusively for pods. Sigh - I now wonder whether i did the right thing to help sort it out...

BTW, they mainly do what we would call "speciality coffee" in their pods - SO light and medium roasts.

If three WA guys can nail it to a fair degree of success, then I reckon Aldi could also do it given "just a few more resources".

On the bright side, there is no way a good grinder and a decent machine (pun half intended) does not make significantly better coffee for the OCD minority (like me) that have a passion for the cuppa Java.

A Current Affair and Pod Machines

There is absolutely no mention of this anywhere on any of Craig Simonís social media so I donít think itís something heís heavily invested in personally. As others have inferred its most likely just a product endorsement that has helped pay the bills. And as heís just opened his new roastery Iíd imagine a bit of a cash injection was useful. I havenít watched the clip, but it cant be any worse than Sean McManusís cringe worthy Torino adds.

Leroy I would guess he is embarrassed about it. It is somewhat similar to a chef instagramming all the latest dishes from his new restaurant, then revealing he actually eats McDonalds for lunch. I don't blame him for doing it, but can see why he wouldn't want to promote it with his main 'boutique' coffee interests.

Nothing was mentioned as to where the used pods end up!

    Landfill, waterways?

They just produce more plastic sh#t that gets thrown away.

Spot on, Topshot. My comment when people tell me they are considering pod machines is would they buy individually wrapped grapes from the supermarket, with all the waste that involves, or would they buy a bunch of grapes in one bag?
