    Molecular Coffee????

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

Just saw this today and thought it may be of interest for discussion: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ar/description

Unfortunately, Australia isn't on their list for the Kickstarter campaign to distribute to so won't get to try.

What's your thoughts? I know coffee is facing a real issue in the near future due to global warming and this is a solution, but as the devoted coffee aficionados we are is it a solution we want?

    Hi all

Excellent. I hope more users take up this product when it becomes a reality. This leaves the real coffee for us :-)

In reality it will not taste like coffee. It will be like coffee substitutes such as caro or chicory based beverages. Food science is not at the stage where a complex natural product can be completely synthesised from other materials at a price point that makes it affordable.

It behooves us to recall just where Starcharcoal started... Hopefully that is what they used as a base so no real coffee was harmed making this latest version of an ersatz cuppa.

I’m sure there is a market for it this. It’ll probably be the same people eating the pretend meat that’ll wash it down with fake coffee and carob “chocolate” for desert.

This is all starting to sound like one of those Sci Fi stories (Soylent Green?) where nothing is the real deal any more and everything is some sort of substitute.

Julia and Winston in George Orwell's "1984":
    “It isn’t sugar?” he asked.
“Real sugar. Not saccharine, sugar. And here’s a loaf of bread- proper, white beard, not our bloody stuff- and a little pot of jam. And here’s a tin of milk-but look! This is the one I’m really proud of. I had to wrap a bit of sacking round it, because-“…
“It’s coffee”, he murmured, “real coffee”.

Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" presents a different but related take on 'substitute' food.
