    New Zealand Coffee

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Just interested if any other "snobs" have tasted NZ coffee recently. We travel there usually every other year and generally enjoy their coffee. However what I noticed recently we start off thinking thats a good cup of coffee but after a short while there seems to be a "slight bitter taste" in the brew. We tasted coffee in Wellington and Nelson and other places at a number of different outlets. Only occassionally did we not find that slight bitter taste in the brew.

Anybody else have any opinions on NZ coffee ?

    Les

Was this at every cafe or just the ones that were supplied by Grinders? (Which is most of them these days).

My experience (a couple of years ago) was limited to Dunedin and other parts of Otago. I wouldn't say that the coffee was bitter, but had higher acidity than average (i.e. bubbles at the top of a flat white) and was less sweet. Slightly different from my own preferred balance, but a nice drink all the same. My other half really liked it, in fact.

Thanks for your reply - The initial taste appeared ok but shortly afterwards the coffee seemed to be bitter but perhaps on reflection there was was more acitidy in the coffee. Our coffee was in Wellington at EIS near the harbour but they do have other outlets in the city. Just not as sweet or as smooth as Melbourne - perhaps an acquired taste or what one is usesd to. My wife also noticed the difference so it wasn't only me.

Do you mean Kaffee Eis? Thatís an ice cream shop owned by a German guy I think. Not somewhere Iíd go looking for quality coffee. Great for a gelato though.

Yes - I disagree - the coffee has always been very good there. Also have tried coffee at many places in NZ Napier, Taupo etc - same comments apply

Ok, Iíve never had coffee there before and Iím not sure who their supplier is. Maybe theyíve changed?
Iíd be interested to know which roaster each cafe used that you had this experience at. Also are you talking about milk drinks or black coffee? Big or small drinks? Take away or sit in? Pretty hard to say with so little info.
