Please help: problems home roasting Ehtiopian Yirg.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi everyone,

Recently I bought some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and have had problems roasting it on gene cafe. I've roasted 3 batches; 1 was light and the other 2 were medium with total roast time of 10-15 minutes. Each batch had the same problem and that was it wouldn't grind through my breville smart grinder or hario hand grinder.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the roast? The green beans?

    Cheers,

    Pat

You’ll find that with the Yirga you’ll need a coarser grind. Strange it not going through the grinder though. Back the grind off and see how you go.

Hi Dan, I've tried going as coarse as I can still not working.. jams the grinder and it's pain in the ass to get the remaining beans out..

Very strange. I had the Smart Grinder before my Rocket and never had that issue. Have you tasted one of the beans? Can you chew it? If they are tough as bullets then maybe they haven’t been roasted long enough or you are ramping up too high too soon and cooking the outside and not the inside. Maybe a slower time ramp up?

    10 - 15mins, what size batch?

The beans are tough to chew. Batch size is 300g.

    Hi Pat.
Could you post some photos of the roasted beans and some crushed beans?

    Cheers

Pat, it sounds like you are roasting to fast. I'd suggest a slower heat ramp up and a longer roast profile.

Searching CS is often good for finding answers to these sorts of problems. For example, search for yirgacheffe gene turned upthe following thread

    There were other threads.
