What GROUP? (Origin of the term "group head")

I've been trying to search for the origin of the term "grouphead" or "group head".

It's easy to find out that E61 was named after the Eclipse of the year 1961 - The year Faema released its now classic thermal stability-delivering group head.

But why is it called GROUP HEAD?

    Anyone?

    Cheers,

    LG

And someone’s gonna ask, so here it is:

Portafilter comes from “portare” to carry, “filtro” filter

    Literally filter carrier

To confuse things, my family in Italy calls the portafilter a group handle and because of that so do I.
