    IMS versus Standard Baskets

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have been using the IMS 58mm H70 2T 26.5 M which holds 22 grams filling to the top (volumetric) and evening then tamp. Very reproducible pours.

I then measured the weight doing the same for the Wega portafilter and basket that came with the machine 18g. Interestingly only 2-3 notches on the Robur coarser, I thought it might be more.

I ordered the IMS but 24.5mm high and will try that.

I know a lot of people would do it by weight but I have it all worked out for the Robur. The only reason I go back to the standard baskets is to reduce the caffeine intake which is always a good thing.

The pour is great for both baskets. It is just always an interesting discussion to have though as everyone does things differently.

I don't want to use single baskets, in fact, I should get the new basket in a few days so will post again when I have tried that out.

I'm also using a "small double" basket for the same reason. It's only 20mm tall and I'm dosing 16.5-17.0g into it and getting good results with a 25ml extraction. Its not IMS but a generic one I picked up quite a few years ago at my local (previous 1st sponsor but no longer sponsor) shop.

I've also got a 23.5mm Pesado (by IMS) rated at 17g but I found I needed over 20g to get the required dose for my E61 machine (5c test), so it stays in the coffee parts box. I don't over-dose my shots and my machine has a standard E61 GH, so I'm a bit disappointed that the rated grams was so out of whack with my setup. I initially tried exactly 17g and when tamped, it barely came up to half way up the basket, so was way off.

The IMS Basket for 58.5mm portafilter is the B70 2T 24.5H is the 24.5mm one and I have been using it a few days. Great basket. It holds 19g if you are interested. These IMS baskets are nice. I have a Pesado portafilter handle which I can also recommend. Stainless Steel and deep for fitting any basket.

I have now dialled it in. I find the shorter basket is probably slightly harder to dial in than the bigger IMS 26.5 or the original Wega basket (super easy). I have the Robur which means you simply don't get sink shots ever. It is more sensitive to grind than the other baskets though. It is subjective but in keeping with what I have heard from Paul at dodgy x when I requested a shorter basket. IMS baskets are slightly harder to grind to and require a slightly finer grind than the standard basket.

I have the Pesado tamper and 58.5mm SS portafilter. Lovely design and nice to use but the standard Wega baskets and portafilter are nice too and made of brass with generous chrome plating. Coffee stuff, the good stuff is nice.
