    Bottled Water for espresso machine

    Given it's likely going to take until after Christmas for me to be able to organise any sort of filter on my home tap water and my new coffee machine will be here in less than two weeks what issues might I have with buying bottled still spring water? I've just seen this piece of information in another thread about calcium and magnesium levels where this was mentioned "calcium at 1.2 mg/l and magnesium at 2.8 mg/l which puts the total hardness at 4.0."
    I know without even testing my tap water will be very hard. I want to avoid scale in the machine for as long as possible.

    Finding the bottled water being discussed wasn't possible but I did find this, Tasmanian Spring Water /Mountain water in a 5 and 10 L cask in Woolies.
    pH 7.6 calcium 31.92 mg/L Magnesium 4.6mg/L Sodium 3.79 mg/L

    Any thoughts. I don;t want to be tweaking it. Just want soemthign that will work. Or can anyone suggest a different bottled water.

    I tried a few bottled waters, not this one however, and found they all had TDS waay over a tolerable level of 50 - 80 ppm.

    Is that disclosed in on the product info?

    Perhaps send a message to member Lyrebird. I’m sure he would be happy to help. He is a bit of a water chemistry guru

    You can guess a rough TDS level by adding up all the cations and doubling the result, so the water in the OP probably has a TDS around 80. We can't know exactly until we see all the water components.

    Given that it is calcium dominant, however, there would be better choices.

    buy some demineralised water, epsom salts and bicarb soda from woolies, google barista hustle water recipes, and go from there.

    haha yeah, I did suggest that. Too hard apparently.
    Its a good way to make up safe water for your machine however
    mine varies slightly as I use a Five Senses recipe as a basis, which Ive modified for taste and TDS over time

    just spoke to someone from jetblack and they have advised there is a perth bottled water that is perfect for the machine. No tweaking required. Aussie natural water. I couldn’t find details on their page of the water when I looked yesterday so pretty pleased with that. I did find they didn’t deliver to me. But I can see 600ml bottles in woolies. Now to find a local supplier of the larger bottles.



    When you are buying bottled water you must make sure…
    Your TDS needs you be nothing less than 100 parts per million or over 150 ppm TDS.
    Total hardness should be between 40 and 50 million
    Chloride needs to be less than 20 parts per million.

    From memory Aussie Natural is the equivalent of filtered and treated tap water, haven't checked recently though.

    When I was looking for an alternative to tap water I tested a few bottled waters, including Aussie.

    All were low pH 6.5 or lower
    all were high TDS

    From memory Aussie had the lowest TDS.

    Just for understanding purposes - the two basic options would be then: filter, treat and test your own tap/collected water - or - get someone else to do it and buy it from them in plastic bottles? and then maybe have to treat and test that water again? I remember reading about micro-plastics being found in bottled water. What effects would these have?

    Perhaps thats it. I'm getting some test strips anyway. but if they are recommending it then it seems a good place to start.
    have found the aussie water is rebadged down south and I can buy whereI live in 15L bottle size so I'll give it a go.
    We are looking at replacing our fridge early next year and the one we intend replacing it with has plumbed water and and ice maker. tap fitting is already to go. I'll investigate putting a filter on there and using the fridge water. Should help the life of the fridge pipework as well hopefully.
