Ordering Cuba beans with PayPal, beware!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hey guys! Recently had a strange experience I thought I'd bring to everyone's attention. Trying some new green beans from a supplier in Aus, some Colombian, Cuba, and Uganda, trying some different stuff to the usual

I put through the order, paying through Paypal, and got an email saying they had to review the transaction. Few days later it was rejected and refunded to me without explanation! Very very strange, as PayPal had never done this before...

So I tried again. Same thing, review, and then rejected. They then sent me a message, and it basically said that:

"U.S. regulations currently prohibit the purchase or sale of various goods and services originating from or being shipped to Cuba."

I was so puzzled haha... and then it occurred to me that PayPal is a U.S. based payment system. Then I looked it up and apparently there's some embargo between the U.S. and Cuba and their products. Had no idea about that, nor do I even know what's going on between the two! Perhaps some rocky relationship of sorts...

And they also asked me to kindly not send this payment again, and will close my account if I violate the terms again.

So if you ever order Cuban green beans from anywhere (even if the beans are currently in Australia and aren't being sent from Cuba!), you may have PayPal troubles! Using other payment methods are fine.

Unsure if CS has ever had this issue, but very bizarre!

Ahhh I can see others have had this issue in the past... years ago! Wow, still ongoing! Just weird that it's purchases made within Australia that it still applies to..

Oh it goes even further back than that. They started the Spanish-American war after a US ship exploded in Havana, without any strong evidence of what caused the event. And they then picked up Puerto Rico, Guam, the Phillipines etc. We have are stuck between two shameless amoral super powers. The yanks are just the lesser of two weevils.

Rather than start a new thread, the Cuban beans I ordered were Cuban Serrano.

Looking them up at different places, under 'Grade' it always says 'Serrano'. Beans on the pages mostly are specialty grade with some exceptions...

But does ANYONE know what Serrano grade means? I thought it was a misprint, but it shows up multiple times from multiple sources... and it doesn't appear to be the farm or estate etc...

(I google translated Serrano and it came up with 'highlander' haha..)

To answer your first and last posts (briefly)...

We don't have that PayPal problem in BeanBay when we sell Cuban coffee -- we fixed that 3 years ago (odd)

Cuban coffee is government regulated, blended and sorted centrally and then allocated a grade (by the government) for export.

The main grades in rough quality order are Turquino, Altura, Montana, Serrano

Serrano is a grade, not a great one and is commonly the lowest export grade. I haven't tried a Serrano that was better than a Turquino which is why the last Cuban we had in BeanBay was a Turquino.

I've had some samples of really good Cubans that will land in the next few months, when they do they'll be in BeanBay.

Well, Serrano translates to "mountain" so perhaps it is a way of indicating a 'high grown' coffee...

    Ah thanks Andy...

Perhaps the 'mountain' reference is to indicate that this lower grade coffee availability is as high as a mountain...

Ah thanks a bunch mate! Yes odd about PayPal!

Ahhh I see... had no idea about those specific gradings! Wish I'd have known about the Serrano prior hehe, but I'll get what roasted goodness I can out of it, still sounds rather different and delish. Thanks

And haha nice one Mal XD
