Coffee hacks - desperate times & desperate measures

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Iím currently traveling in Northern India and I thought I did really well to feed my addiction. I brought a 600ml bottle of cold drip and roasted and ground a fresh bag of coffee to use for our over. A few days in and I realize that I have run out of papers for the pour over. Where I am it is fairly rural and there idea of brewed coffee is instant (so I found out), do there I no chance of more papers.

Itís not ideal but Iím now using half a serviette to filter and believe it or not it is actually not a bad brew either, or maybe Iíve forgotten what good coffee tastes like.

Thatís my story but wondering if anyone else has any hacks on desperate times?

If you have any other suggestions for pour over without right papers then Iíd be interested s to here too.

I once forgot my hand grinder when I was camping so fashioned a mortar and pestle out of some rocks.

Maybe I should put it on kickstarter as a new, revolutionary grinding method.

My wife is at home, for some reason she didn’t want to travel to India with me.

Put your marketing hat on and sell it as the new chemical free, no BPA, no stainless, no metal way to grind! Innovative of you to come up with it.

You could try unbleached cotton muslin as used in coffee socks.

The thread count would require some experimentation but if whatever you can get is too open in the weave you could double up the fabric. One slight advantage in your circumstances is that cloth filters can be rinsed for re-use. However, if they cannot be properly dried between use, or stored in an effective freezer, you would need to guard against, and inspect closely for, development of mould.

Given your location I would make sure that, before first use, any fabric is put through a rolling boil for several minutes. It would also need to be well rinsed through with boiling water before each use.

Usual disclaimer - these are just suggestions; whatever you do is your decision and responsibility.

Sell it as "Paleo Coffee" to be had with desert after a Paleo diet mains.

Just do an immersion brew in pretty much any vessel you can find then pour the whole lot through pretty much any clean material you can find to use as a filter.

Thats great dedication and innovation. I could actually imagine doing something like that and see all of the non coffee educated people thinking that the plot has finally been lost.

Some great suggestions for my situation. I was look for a cheese cloth or something like that but my Hindi is not very good, there are so many shops too but mostly basic shops. I didn’t think of immersion. I could used one of my socks (not previously worn) for this. Not sure if I have a large clean container at the hotel.

Only a few more days before 3 days in Singapore and then home to my broken Strega
