    Australian Roadhouse Ratings

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
On a previous thread I laughed and laughed at 30in30 referring to the "old road-house meringue-a-cino".

When breaking the tedium on long haul road trips I have almost always been disappointed at the quality of the coffee at road houses, even though they might have the grinder, a big machino, even a sign that reads "the best coffee this side of Brisbane". I always feel like a goose when I line up for coffee I know is going to be pretty ordinary.

Do CSers have any pull over recommendations for travellers on Australias federal highways? Are their of proprietors out there who finesse their technique when things are quiet and can tell a Machiato from a meat pie?

I am particularly interested re the Syd Canberra Melb and Syd Brissy routes.

An example of an oasis is if you are heading up to the top of Cape York, the Petrol station in Lakeland "town" not only serves good coffee but grows its own beans out the back and roasts them as well. Not bad considering every next stop up to Bamaga is strictly International Roast.

Between Taree and Coffs there is a little Teahouse about 200metres on the west side of the highway that really knows how to make coffee, it was a bit of a find really. They have the gear and get their beans from a specific roaster in Sydney. The name of this tiny village escapes me however - does anyone have a clue where Im talking about?

I think the place you are talking about is before Port Macquarie turn off even. Maybe Nabiac somewhere around there. I have seen a Teahouse from the Pacific HWY that has a sign for a coffee roaster from Sydney on that.

Hope it helps rather than leads you off track.

I suspect the only answer to roadhouse coffee pretty well anywhere
in Aus is ... Presso + hand grinder.

I remember now!!!!! Moorland cottage 20 minutes north of Taree (about a minute off the highway, west side) makes good coffee and has a nice place to sit. good luck anywhere else in Taree Nabiac etc etc

For instance you could ask them about their coffee gear and they may be able to provide a CS response.

Are you specifically talking Roadhouses or are you wanting any place that will serve great coffee?

Were about 40kms to the west of the Newell hwy, from Narrabri if youre travelling on that route north or south! Were just not open on Sundays! ;)

If youre heading through Tamworth along the New England hwy...there are a couple of places there and Armidale, further north, has some good coffee too.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
It seems that when traveling long distances I am pressured for time so dont want to go too far off the main track. Irrational fear of losing time. Eg Sydney to Canberra have sometimes chosen Mcafe which I have now boycotted due to repeated disappointment. It may well be worth pulling over at Berrima but unless there is an exceptional cafe there, it is too far off the highway. Presso is probably the go for the Canberra trip.

Anyone had coffee at the winery near Lake George?

I notice the big cheesecake might be up for sale to the left of the highway in Marulan... now theres a business op - turn it into the Big Cappucino.
