Fair Trade, Organic & Rainforest Alliance?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
A question for all those in the coffee import know?

Is there such a bean that is Rain Forrest allianced as well as Fair Trade AND Organic?
All 3 combined seem to be a rare thing. And if you do know of one, what is its qualities? and How much per kilo would i expect to pay for green bean?

I think Id be able gain all three certifications for my two plants.

As a trained auditor I should be able to make sure all the boxes are ticked.

Expect to pay a lot for mine though because the costs of 3 certifications will be a lot to offset with only two plants.

"Thundergod Estate" will be one of the smallest producers on the planet and the exclusivity alone will drive the price up.

Ill be sprinkling some pumice around them soon so that I can also say theyre grown in volcanic soil.

RFA, FT, Organic, volcanic soil grown Australian coffee beans.

And TG, it would be a bonus if youre suburb was ever used for radioactive waste, then your beans would glow in the dark too! ;D

Luke - the answer is yes. Like any green, how much per kg. depends on how good they are. And if you find some and roast them...make sure all your roasting gear has been manufactured by happy roaster-making elves; has never been contaminated by roasting other non RFA/FT/Organic varieties, and the biodegradable bags you pack them in have also been manufactured to strict ecologically sensitive means.

Where does it end...perhaps with Kopi Luwak - that one has even been recycled! ::)

You wont find genuine "Rain Forrest Alliance (RFA) organic Fairtrade" coffee as the RFA and Fairtrade are two very different camps.

There are a few roasters producing their own dodgy blends that are sold as RFA-Fairtrade-Organic but the only have a percentage of each in their blends.

Sometimes we source Fairtrade Organic, sometimes RFA organic, and I have purchased Fairtrade-Bird Friendly-organic which is the closest to what you are asking about.

How much? *About 15%-20% a kilo over the asking price of the same bean without those 3 certifications.

Can you get it? *Nup. *
The brokers have to spend a big whack more per container so until the market place really needs it they dont bring it in. *

I think from memory we have only had a little more than a handful of samples that were Fairtrade-Bird Freindly-Organic and only a couple of those made it to CS.

(edit -- sorry Den, Im slow on the keyboard)
Is there a Kopi Luwak social co-op?

What irritates me is the likes on the big fast food chains
It costs many hundreds of thousands of dollars on the big advertising campaigns that is only in the interests of the advertiser and no one else

Call me sceptical but in reality they donít really care a bleep about the farmers as long as they can advertise the fact that they support the concept

I wonder if they pay a fee to use the logo and if so have they created another toothless tiger

You may as well add ASA Certification and ISO9001 (if thats still the latest) plus throw in some 6 Sigma for good measure.

Ill have to look into the ASA but my qualifications are in ISO9001:2004 so thats a given (9001 is the standard, 2004 is the latest version).

...not to mention the size of the label required to display them all. You might have to sell in min. 1kg lots to ensure the label is big enough

Re: Fair Trade, Organic & Rainforest Alliance?

    Ok ok! i get it:)
There is a reason i asked and that is because i work at an organic resturant/cafe that currently sells a Brazillian organic bean roasted by Genavase. The problem is that im pretty sure it was roasted about this time last decade wich makes it just a little bit not fresh if u know what i mean.
So what are my current and hopefully sustainable options?
P.S. what the beep is HACCP?

Genovese are a respected roastery. Id be very surprised if they werent interested in your feedback and wouldnt want to rectify what may well be caused by a fault in the delivery chain.

Alternatively, there are lots of options for you to choose from - that being just one of the wonderful things about coffee. Im sure any of the sponsors here, including myself (cuppacoffee) would be interested to speak with you and discuss your needs.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) is concerned with food safety, that in the main, work with large organisations (probably due to the cost involved).
