    Cast Iron Coffee Grinder

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

I am looking for an old style cast iron coffee grinder for a wedding anniversary present.

Any ideas on where I may find one? - preferably in Adelaide but I am open to suggestions from elsewhere in Oz.

    Many thanks,

    DrT

Do you mean the sort that you grind manually via a handle on the side rotating clockwise? :-?

Ive seen them, but admittedly wouldnt know if anyone actually stocks them or still manufactures them as a retro replica.

Id scour antique stores, or La Bay, Lay Evil, or the Trading Post, for one.

Or, your weekend rag should have a shopper section with a collectables section, and also a section where you can list an item that youre seeking to buy.

To be honest, the style isnt all that important, as long as its manual.

I have called one local supplier and they have a large cast iron model all the way from London - the "Birchleaf". It has a large wheel mounted on a horizontal axle and makes the unit look bigger than what I think it really is.

It however is $175 and beyond my price point.

There are indeed some of the style I originally thought of on ebay, but the same image appears again and again on multiple listings and so I think I will steer clear of that....

    Hi,

if you check out Presso Australia one of the sponsors I think they had some German Zassenhaus grinders to go with the Presso.

Watch out for evilbay there seems to be plenty of replica (cheap chinese non working) cast iron grinders out there. You might be lucky and get a good secondhand Zass or similar one there if it hasnt had much use.

What about a brass turkish coffee grinder?
    Manual and look nice.
    Not too expensive.

Thanks for these responses - Ive had a look on the web at some of the zassenhaus gear and the top model fits the "looks" bill, but it is right up there with the birchleaf on price. Turkish grinders are also a good idea, but not quite fitting what I was after. Any suggestion is better than none however !

If all else fails DrT in sourcing that obscure grinder, how about just a polished rendition of Auld Lang Syne on the baggies to celebrate the anniversary ;D

Auld Lang Syne? You must be kidding !?!?!

Ive played a few others like Skye Boat Song and Highland Cathedral (slow airs) for her a couple of years back, but youve got to be on best behaviour when she too is a piper.... No mistakes allowed !

Funny how its possible to play hornpipes and jigs (faster tunes) a bit better after a good coffee....
