    LONG-DISTANCE LOOKING IN LISMORE

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I am the lucky father of a senior (4th year) student from the University of Delaware (in the good old USA) who is taking her semester abroad at Southern Cross University in Lismore. She has many good things to say about AU and her immediate (and not-so-immediate) environs, and only an occasional criticism or complaint. The other day she mentioned that it is really not possible for her to purchase a good cup of coffee on campus, in Lismore, or in the surrounding area (of course she doesnt have a car over there, so she is limited in her range). A "good cup of coffee" by her definition and mine would be what one could get at Starbucks or Caribou, or from hundreds of independent coffee roasters, brewers and vendors all over America. There are so many such places in Chicago (where I live) that an unwary coffee drinker can easily find him- or herself caught between two baristas from rival shops, slugging it out on the sidewalk for the prize of a $2.50 purchase. What goes on over there...Down Under? Is it really such a forlorn place for coffee drinkers? Or is my daughter (in other circumstances very independent and very self-sufficient in the mundane matters of life) just looking in the wrong places? Of course, she would fly back immediately to have me committed to an asylum if she knew I were doing this, but are there any Coffee Snobs out there who could give me a tip to pass along to my little girl? Daddys stock price can always use a boost.

Gday oldChicagodude and welcome to CS!

First, in case youre not aware, Lismore is more like a country town rather than a metropolitan city like Chicago. Understandably, that limits coffee choices. The good news is that I understand there is a Gloria Jeans in Lismore, and Im sure they would sell something they call coffee and similar to the awful stuff that comes from Starbucks, who incidentally, have closed down the majority of their stores here (were not unhappy about that).

There is another place your daughter could try called Caddies, but please dont take that as a personal recommendation.

If all else fails, Daddys stock price would be handsomely rewarded if Daddy were to buy his daughter a grinder and coffee machine from one of our Sponsors and have it shipped to her with some freshly roasted beans. ;)

    Cheers!

Yes, Lismore is barren when it comes to decent espresso. Her best bet is to catch a bus 30 minutes north-east to Ballina - theres a little joint hidden away off the main street, towards the river, that uses Morgans (a Sydney roaster of repute).

I think its called Evolution :-?

Oh, and Den, theres a Caddies in Ballina as well ... its crap ;D

Youd call a "good cup of coffee" from Starbucks!? :o

Wow...thats pretty low grade here.... ;D

If your daughter ever gets up the hill to Armidale, tell her to get down to the Goldfish Bowl...they should serve up something akin to real coffee there...

    Unlike Starchucks....;D

Uni campuses arent known for good coffee.

Its strange to see you compare Starbucks evenly with independent roasters.
Are the independent roasters over there that bad?

GrindOnDemand - Ballina is east (on the coast).
Head northeast and youll hit Byron Bay at the coast.

oCd I hope she finds a decent cuppa not too far from school.

I have had good Coffee at Bangalow which is not far away, and think that Lismore would probably have some decent Coffee shops however If its the seen at Starbucks scene she is after Lismore might not be the place. The Local MCds may even have a Mcafe, he says tongue in cheek (FWIW our MCds are slightly more upmarket than some i saw in the USA a few years ago)

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
Ask for the Condiments (salt+Pepper+sugar+Jams)at Breakfast. San Antonio Mercado.. also not terribly clean.
My Brother was driving through New Mexico and called into one at lunch time and his wife and he were the only customers (Scary) this in a small town.
Actually ours are like 4 star restaurants compared to some I tried in Texas and Florida, No Fense tended to Americans, just stating the facts.
