    Indonesian coffee developement

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Something interesting happened recently, but Ill start the story back a few years.

I had a young barista who worked for me some time ago. His father was a coffee processor in Sumatra, and at the time they exclusively supplied Charbucks. Whenever he was on holiday visiting his son, he would come into the roastery and chat all things coffee. After working for me for about a year, his son left to go work on the plantation.

Last week a guy walks into the roastery, and to my shock its a well-fed version of the same barista. They are starting to import into Australia seeing as they are no longer dealing with SBs. He dropped off some samples and is coming in tomorrow to cup them with me. The coffee is grown in the Aceh region and I have samples of both the Grade 1 and the Gold grade (which is apparently only a small number of bags). Its given me a chance to get some direct trade coffee from Sumatra, if its up to scratch taste wise, as well as knowing all the little details that often get lost with a broker. I am expecting a few bags to arrive by end of year. He is seeing a few top roasters nationwide and I believe that 5 Senses and St Ali are getting some coffee through him as well.

Another interesting fact is that he has a pet civet cat..................we all see where this is going..............and he is going to bring me some home made/grown/processed Kopi Luak from top grade Arabica on his next visit.

We cupped this coffee today and it went very well. In the cupping it had great body with low acidity, flavours of caramel, molasses, citrus. As an espresso it had great body and finish and a distinct lemon zest note that held well with milk.

We are expecting a first shipment in Jan/Feb.

I am also receiving a 1Kg sample of Kopi Luak mid-Dec. I should be able to get 5Kg quantities at a reasonable price (for this bean) early next year.

Keep your eyes peeled for it.

Thats great news Jason - nice to be able to have a direct line to the processor.

Im presuming the Kopi will be roasted before it hits our shores?

This is a bit off topic, but I was in your shop the other day, (satureday, 25oct) had a cappa, it was one of the best I have had, my pregnant wife was as equally impressed with the de caf. Would have liked to have seen the roaster in action.

Presume all you want, but no it will be green (is it green?). The processor has looked into it and he can bring 5Kg lots in without any hassle

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
I hear theres a pub in Sydneys eastern suburbs that might be interested in your kopi luwak. They tried a similar thing with ice cream, and got a huge response.

    *cough*

Seriously though, as weird as that stuff is, Ive smelt the roasted product (didnt get to try it) and it smells divine.
