    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to put the feelers out to see if there are any people interested in competing in this years NSW Championships; Barista, Latte Art, Cupping & Coffee in Good Spirits. The competition will be on Jan 10 (and 11 if high numbers) so if you are even remotely considering it, please send me an email or post here with mention of the category you are interested in entering. In doing so you arent committing to anything but just letting us know there are a few out there who are interested in competing.

There wont be any regional comps this year so if you would like to have a go at the nationals, you will have to compete in Qld at the opens. Are there many baristas in Wagga that you know of that are interested in competing in any of the comps?

Not that I am aware, there is not a strong coffee culture out here at the moment. I am trying but it is going to take a while.

Question from the uninitiated... where do I find out the guidelines/what to do for the comp (besides the pre-requisite promo stuff on the application form)? Particularly interested in latte art.

google world latte art championships. It will take you to the official SCAE WLAC website. Rules are available under "competition".

Dont expect the rules to be in "black and white" like barista comp...even though there are some grey areas in barista comp rules....but latte art rules are even more convoluted.

Spectators are always welcome at AASCA comps.

From the AASCA page is the following:

    [hr]

    NSW Barista/Latte Art Championships
    January 10, 2009 from 10am to 5pm
    Retail Food Group Training Facility
    Organized by Tom Yeoman nswbarista@aasca.com

    [hr]

Drop Tom an email to confirm the dates before you make plans (and it would be good post the info here for others when you find it too).

    :)

Andy, where is that facility? I had previously tried to track down more specifics but just came up with the same info you posted. Ive only been to one championship before, the US Nationals at SCAA Long Beach, but enjoyed the opportunity to see how some things "should be done", and the signature drink was a bit of fun. I havent been keeping up with the news over there, but at one stage they were talking about (did?) ban public spectators. I thought banning the public would be a brilliant way to push demand for quality Baristas, holy cow ::)

Excuse my ignorance - what exactly is invilved in a cupping comp? Are the people doing the cupping themselves judged on their ability to identify varieties?

From memory as described by a former Aussie Cupping Champ IIRC.

You get given a series of 3 cups of coffee to taste and you have to pick the odd one out.

Your choice how you select. Taste, smell or toss a coin.
I think theres a time limit and the winner is the one that gets the most correct answers.

Re: NSW Championships - interested in competing?

Yeha I triangular setup. 8 sets off coffee in groups of 3. One in each group is the odd one out. Just gotta pick it out. If its a tie, it goes by time. So speed and accuracy are key.

I wonder if I could be lucky enough to win by choosing with the tossing a coin method?

    Youve got a three-sided coin? :P

Seriously though, be great if people would put their hands up to enter so a NSW comp could go ahead.

    Good point Michelle.

The easy way around that problem is to use a die and allocate 2 numbers to each cup.

    NSW Barista Comp results:

    1st - Habib Maarbani
    2nd - Paul Asquith
    3rd - Sam Sgambellone

Well done to these guys. (Excuse me if the spellings are incorrect).

I cant remember the results for ACT exactly, but theres a start :) My brain is too fried from too many coffees. Good stuff on the ACT guys making it all the way over to Sydney.
