Caffeine limits blood flow to heart muscle during exercise

In healthy volunteers, the equivalent of two cups of coffee reduced the bodys ability to boost blood flow to the heart muscle in response to exercise, and the effect was stronger when the participants were in a chamber simulating high altitude, according to a new study in the Jan. 17 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

I wrote a thesis a few years ago on the feasibilty of completely decaffeinating tea & coffee (decaf blends still contain significant levels of caffeine in them), and research into the area showed me there is a lot of unfounded paranoia when it comes to caffeine. I read this article in NewScientist in September on the benefits of caffeine. Have a read yourself (its subscirber only, but I pdfed it) and you may not feel so guilty about slogging back all that dreamy coffee.... mmmm coffee.

And caffeine, is a pain killer, too. And an even more effective one if taken in conjunction with aspirin. Caffeine not only stops headaches---it can give them. A drug for all seasons.

The exact mechanisms of caffeines effects are not well known but are probably due to altered levels of CNS neurotransmitters and the metabolism of circulating free fatty acids. Caffeines primary benefit during exercise is its effect on free fatty acid metabolism. When free fatty acids are used for fuel they spare glycogen, glucose and amino acids which would otherwise be metabolized. The net effect is to increase blood sugar (glucose) for use as muscle fuel. In other words, higher blood sugar levels for longer periods of time. This is also why coffee is popular among students. The brain functions exclusively on glucose, and higher blood sugar levels facilitate thinking. The most popular effect of caffeine is not physical, but mental.

So there you have it Coffeesnobs, if you want to be a hard core gym jock drink your coffee. If its a placebo then Im glad I am taking an oral placebo and not a suppository....

I think it might have been in one of the Paul Bassett videos, but Dr Karl mentioned the restriction of blood vessels caused by caffeine. He also mentioned that if you eat even a small amount of dark chocolate, that the restriction wont happen.

all I know is they give it quite regularly (daily/once every second day - cant remember anymore) to extremelly premature babies - so it must be good stuff :)
Come to think about it, that explains why my 2.5 yrs old daughter likes coffee - shes already used to the caffeine from her very early days (she was born premature)

    Re: Caffeine limits blood flow

Hello one and all, I have just read the info referred to by dialagranny and am damned pleased I love my coffee. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I was wondering if anyone knows if the process of de-caffination (I buy my wife swiss-water method de-caffinated - if the method is important) reduces or changes the health benefits as stated in the article?

My wife does have quite heavy heart palpitations when she drinks a regular cofee and so has now gone for the de-caf option instead.

    Anyone heard anything on this?

    Cheers,
    Sir V.
