Hawaiian wins (US)WRBC with 100% Hawaiian blend

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Kailua-Kona Hawaii (March 3, 2010) In two coffee industry firsts this past weekend in Los Angeles, Pete Licata of Honolulu became the first representative from Hawaii to win the (United States) Western Regional Barista Competition and also the first-ever to prevail at any barista competition using 100% Hawaiian coffee.

Mr. Licatas espresso blend of three coffees included two 100% Kona coffees from Hula Daddy Coffee of Holualoa and a third originating from Maui.

"We congratulate Pete for his masterful performance," commented Kalena Jue, owner of Hula Daddy Coffee. "By besting Californian baristas that have historically dominated national barista competitions with coffees from Africa and Latin America, Pete has shown that there is a new generation of espresso expertise being grown right here in Hawaii."
    About Hula Daddy Coffee

Hula Daddy Kona Coffee is a boutique estate located above the town of Kona, Hawaii on the slope of Mount Hualalai volcano. In 2008, coffee reviewer Ken Davids awarded Hula Daddys Sweet Kona Light coffee an historic 97-point score, making it one of the 3 highest rated coffees in history and the highest-ever rated Hawaiian coffee. All of the coffees offered by Hula Daddy are grown on its private 34-acre plantation.

That is excellent news for Pete and a real shake-up for West Coast USA coffee... most of the big players are there with some amazing specialty coffee from around the globe so it is an even bigger win.

We have a Captain Cook Kona in the next BeanBay, not a Hula Daddy though
    :(

Kenneth David TOTALLY lost me when he awarded a nespresso espresso capsule 91. Maybe he gets access to better capsules than me but I cannot imagine any capsule here scoring a 80.

Yeah, I certainly do too. It would make a great calibration coffee but I guess with a high score like that and a (tiny) 34 acre farm there aint much to go around.

Javaphile, just minus 11 from 97 and the real score is 86.

A non sponsor coffee roaster in Sydney had some. Good stuff.... 97 points? *::) Points are a rubbish way to describe coffee.
