Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Not too sure how well this thread will work for people with slooooow internet connections. *:o

Just got home from the Rocks an hour ago so just a quick and dirty post (albeit LONG post) to get some pics up for those interested CSrs.

    [hr]

Toby had a roaster there, this was it getting setup. *Sadly I didnt see it running. *(did anyone else?)
    [hr]

Voodoo coffee had a neat idea. *A range of roasted beans that the consumer can blend themselves and pay $32 per kg. *The have all the origins labeled and give you a bit of paper to write down the amounts of each that you used. * I think its a good sign that consumers of coffee beans are getting more interested in getting an improved cup.
    [hr]

A young lady looks in awe of a line of Mazers or is that the $6000 superauto that has caught her eye?
    [hr]

The D-longy NestPresso gizmo. *Comes in purple, red gray and white in both a manual and an auto configuration. *It is really important that these come in fasionable colours (or so I was told). * ::) *
The stainless mug beside them is an electric wizzer-thingo that heats half a cup of milk and wizzes it into "micro-foam". *I tried the milk from one of these and it really wasnt too bad, maybe 50 degrees (a little cool) but it would be a good match for the capsule coffee maker.
    [hr] *

A CoffeeSnob fights with her grinder. * ;D *The coffee tent with the most amount of action was the "champions tent". *Previous and current champions knocked-out coffee to 1000s of people. *The queues were amazing all day. *Sadly the champions were using other peoples coffee and other peoples equipment so the results could never be world class but I am told they still did amazing things with what they were given although I hear sunburn (working into the sun for hours) might have been another variable for them to battle.
    [hr]

More people, everywhere you looked in the arvo was a sea of heads (or a sea of bums if you were really short I spose). *Across the back is a coffee tent that looks very much like all the Sydney postcards I have seen.
    [hr]

As they say, you cant pick your neighbours! *The whole event seems to be a contrast of low and high-end (or is that a range of options for a range of consumers and bugets?.
    [hr]

These guys were busy all day. *I was surprised how many shots they pulled. *The machines were there to be used in anger and not just "shiny display items" which is a cool trend.
    [hr]

    W.T.F.? *(whats this for) *;)
Special plastic group handle is attached to a NASA space probe model to create an alien turd. *Sheeze, keep the arty-farty home decorators away from coffee hardware PLEASE. *Yeah, the hardware CSrs use is ugly but it makes great coffee!
    [hr]

A Sunbeam salesman stares in awe of a whizzy stainless grinder.
    [hr]

The frantic pace of the latte art contest. *The machine height would have caused quite a few of the competitors some grief... cmon organisers, at least provide a good work environment so these artists can do their stuff. *Apart from that the quality of the output was great and the clock seemed to be the biggest hurdle in the point scoring.
    [hr]

Nathan quickly reads his palms to see what the judges (4 of them on stage here) thought.
    [hr]

The judges discussed, argued, debated for a LONG time and then had a couple of recounts. *15-20 minutes it took to announce the results and they wanted to make sure it was right!
    [hr]

Early in the day there was enough room to move at the coathanger-end of the AromaFest.
    [hr]

Later in the day the queues for the champions tent looked like this!
    [hr]

CS sponsor FreshCoffee (CosmoreX) "sharpens his pencil" and gives someone a quote on some cool new toys.
    [hr]

All in all the day was good, it was great to meet some more CSrs but the crowds were way too thick to relax and enjoy the fantastic weather at the Quay. *Its strange when a shows huge success might be its downfall too.

I saw Tobys roaster in action. Not as much smoke as I thought would be the case.
Toby was handing out beans fresh from the cooling tray, but not bagged, just handfuls to the poor people lining up for 20 minutes plus.

One of the CS site sponsors.
This was taken before 10am, any time after about 10:30am it was packed. The shot I had was put together by David Makin and really was very good. You might notice some tool on the left... " I roast beans too... "

The champions tent was nutty. Super long line all day. I wonder if the general public really knew who the baristas were?

Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Fest - Photos (LONG)

Greetings Andy & others that attended. It was a fine daY not just because of the weather...busy, nice people, lots to talk to and about, sore throat material!

Really nice to see some of the "old hands" even if only for a short gday, and even better to meet some I havent met before (cheers Nunu...would like to try one of your Pizzas one day).

Nice to talk to other industry people we know as well, although we were ALL busy. One colleague I visited 4 times during the course of the day to try & get a cuppa (our marquee did not have power) was not able to oblige due to the number of people on the stand each time I went in there.

We did manage get coffee from others so didnt miss out on the caffeine hit for the day ( need to get just one coffee or go the headache later for not feeding the habit).

In contrast the next day we attended the Int Catering Trade Fair. This also was a really nice day where myself and wife got to wander around & network ( we werent on a stand) with other industry people. Surprised by the lack of coffee company stands this time around, suppose theyve all migrated to the Fine Food shows instead. *Still, as said no shortage of colleagues to talk to.

Good to see Pinot (John Doyle) author of Barista Techniques there, giving his spiel & Power Point presentation.

Surprised we didnt meet more CS people at the Aroma particularly some that we know actually live in Sydney, but not surprising not to see any at ICTF because it is a trade thing....!

For Anne & I, a lovely weekend away mixing business & pleasure.

    Catch you next year,
    FC.

Should have been reading my watch rather than my palm (went over time!) - the palm wasnt running accurately for me on the day in any case - smudged with coffee grinds!

Great to meet you Andy and others that I ran into.

    Cheers, Nathan
