    Gloria Jeanís appoints new CEO
    Hospitality Magazine - 8th April.

COFFEE chain Gloria Jeanís has appointed Michael Devlin as the CEO of its Australian operation.

The new role is an addition to the companyís senior management team following last yearís purchase of the international brand rights from Gloria Jeanís Coffees USA.

Joint owners Nabi Saleh and Peter Irvine will concentrate on developing the international side of the business.

ďMikeís appointment is the start of a new growth period for Gloria Jeanís Coffees. The current 88 international stores in 13 countries see the Australian model as the benchmark for how to operate a number one specialty coffee retailer,Ē executive chairman of Gloria Jeanís Coffees International,Ē Nabi Saleh said.

ďMikeís experience in fast growing businesses is what we need to take Gloria Jeanís to the next level,Ē he said.

ďLocally we will continue to focus on store growth and delivering the best cup of coffee to our customer every time. We have opened, on average, three stores a month since opening our first store in 1996 and now have 246 Australian stores.

ďOur immediate goal is to ensure we have sufficient, qualified, calibre support office staff to continue our strong store growth and category leadership.

ďInternationally we are focussed on emerging markets with plans to open new operations in England, China, Hong Kong, South Africa and Japan in the first year.Ē

I tried Gloria Jeans coffees and teas back about a dozen years ago and was singularly unimpressed. Everything was old and stale and way over-priced. They appeared to spend more on the packaging than on the product itself. It was another instance of Starbuck Fever where people were buying the product for the name on it rather than the quality of the contents.

Well they were one of the first to introduce those crappa frappa orange beano things to the shopping malls with those nice cosy lounges etc. I notice the number of lounges have reduced to be replaced with more hard shonky chairs.

I found their coffee to be far too hot, milk far too hot. Some of the weird coffee based cold drinks were okay to try once. Their food is generally stuff like muffins and slices that can sit around for days and is over priced.

They seem to only serve coffee in disposable paper cup. I have yet to see them serve in any other cups.

My wife asked me the other day....

"Why cant I smell coffee when I walk past Gloria Jeans?"

... considering they have 50-100kg of roasted coffee in there on display and would go through ??kg of coffee a day why can you not smell the coffee?

    ;D

I suggest a class action on behalf of Aussie coffee drinkers.....norma jeans and charbux have blatantly misrepresented the brown water that they sell as coffee. This is clearly criminal and we need to win this case to close down these imposters *;)
