That is a shame. Of course, not everyone will be available whatever day it is held, it is just in the nature of things.

I hope that everyone supports this event so that we can have many more such events in the future.

If you have buddies in the forum who live in Perth, let them know about this!

How exciting..... Ive bean envious of the Melbourne get togethers, and now we have our own.

so is this taste off about blends?

I havent blended yet... Im still drinking SO. Im happy to bring some of that, but it might be a bit simple for your crazy blenders.

Either way, Im definitely keen to come.

Is there anything else to bring?

    James,

Hey, this will be fun. Dont worry about blendng, not blending. Anything you bring will enhance the quality of the event, most importantly yourself!

    Dear Alec:

    Alec:

Great, that is two confirmed with me three and a friend of mine who is, I think, joining the forum four.

Im sure youre just being modest about your roasting. If not we can always spit it out! :)

People who have not beans to roast or bring in are welcome of course anyway but trying peoples home roasted beans is a real treat.

    Regards,
    Grant

Dont be so sure - I wont mind if people spit it out.

I made a chimney tonight, so hopefully that is a change for the better.

Hey Wattgn and all the others from Perth. Have a great day on Saturday. Im sorry to be missing out on meeting all you fellow coffee nuts. Supreme seem to be a good mob. They were generous to me when I had problems with my Cimbali Domus and grinder and deserve to be supported.

Dont forget to take a few piccies for the rest of us

    Cheers,

    Louis

    Grant,

Im a newbie to coffee roasting, only a few roasts under my belt. Im keen to come along and try out others roasts and have a go o a commercial machine. Ive only really used my silvia/rocky, itll be interesting to see how the taste varies.

I had better get roasting tonight to have something ready for the day!
Its great that you have organised such an event in Perth, I look forward to it.

Re: Coffee Snobs PERTH Cafe Day Saturday June 25th

    Alan:

Im glad you can make it.

It will be a fairly informal and relaxing get together and the first time, I think, that any people from CS have met anyone else from CS, at least over here in Perth.

I was doing some more tasting of my brews tonight and decided to make some changes to what I was going to offer. It is early days for me too regarding blending my own beans. I have been buying green beans pre blended previously. I decided that this was safer and cheaper than experimenting. Now with a supply of beans at such excellent prices, it seems criminal not to experiment.

It is a fact that until you meet with others and taste what they do with their blends and roasts, it is impossible to make comparisons. If a picture is worth a thousand words then tasting must be worth many more!

    Regards,
    Grant

Yes, there have bean ;D some changes with my blend also (mainly as I couldnt get my base bean to second crack last night... bring on summer... or that new i-roast?).
Anyway, have got a few things for you to try including last years Yemen.
Grant: my wife has sort of invited herself (why did i get her addicted to espresso?).
Hope thats OK! My point is... mums the word about what ive spent on green beans OK?! (Shes only seen the tip of the bean iceburg in the garage!)
    See ya tomorrow,

    Thats funny Matt... ;D
I hope she doesnt use the internet else the cats outa the bag. :)

I wonder how many people are finding "special" hiding places for their green bean habit (or re-printing their own Giotto receipt) ;)

    Cafť Day Perth June 2005

It was a small but dedicated group of people that presented for this first Perth get together.

    CSers:
    Almac * * * * * *Alec
    LongMatt * * *Matt
    Bigal * * * * * *Alan

    Soon to be CSers

    Willem & Mandy

The owner of Supreme Coffee Machines, Peter Holton, gave a fine introduction, showing us how to use the professional machinery at our disposal. *He then gave a very useful demonstration of how and how not to make espresso (over and under extracted etc). *Peter brewed some Delaroma beans which went down very well. *These evidently have Guatamalan Margogype beans in the blend and the brew was very smooth and tasty.

I was first up after Peter and learnt the hard way that I really should have had 250grams of roasted beans (as I instructed everyone clearly!). *I started with about 240g of green beans. *With sampling etc and water loss I probably only had 160g. *This proved to be insufficient to really dial everything in to my satisfaction but I enjoyed myself playing with it all. *Next time I will be better prepared.

The enthusiasm of everyone was contagious, and it was impossible for anyone to not enjoy the event, as it was apparent, that everyone was right into it. *It is one thing to share stuff on internet (and what a wonderful thing to do, it is) but there is nothing like meeting in person and sampling each otherís efforts in a cupping like this. *We were being allowed to play on some pretty impressive machinery not to mention the acres of chrome and polished stainless steel which provided the backdrop to the event. *Yes, this was the equivalent of Barbagalloís car showroom, surrounded by La Cimbali equipment (Supreme Machines are the agent for La Cimbali and a number of other well known brands).

We each took our turn dialling in our brews in and playing barista. *We recorded our tasting notes under headings of body, acidity and balance along with a subjective rating. *This meant that there was some framework for everyone to compare the different brews.

In the end there was a clear winner, Matt! *His blend of 50% Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe/25% Yemeni Ismali/25% Bali Shinzan God Mountain proved to be irresistible. *Even Peter was impressed. *Mind you these are some of the worlds finest beans too so anyone who thinks money spent on expensive beans is wasted, think again!

Matt was also generous and thoughtful enough to provide some quantities of his green beans to give away to the group. *I grabbed some Sumatran Mandheling and Bali Gunung Batur. *Thanks a lot Matt.

I also couldnít help notice the blending on the fly. *Matt showed up with a carry bag full of green beans (we found out what they were for) and roasted beans (why were there so many packets?). *Anyway he pulled the bags of roasted beans out and then used my now empty container to make up his blend. *Talk about taking advantage of the competition! *He he.

Well, if winners are grinners then Matt is it on both counts! *I gave a small token for his prize blend (and impeccable Barista skills), a Miss Maud Mud Cake. *I wasnít sure if chocolate was right although one look at his big smile and I figured I had got it right!

All in all, a very enjoyable event. *The only bad thing of course is that we now realise how much can be gained by getting together and sharing our skills and knowledge. *This means that we may have to regularly get together to repeat this experience.

Peter has indicated that he could accommodate us every six to eight weeks. *Bearing in mind that Peter has three young children and is giving away his Saturday afternoon, I think he is being very generous with his time.

A big thank you to Peter for holding this event.

I think we may alternate between having this event at Supreme Coffee Machines and at a memberís house. *I will be seeking feedback on the event from attendees and get ideas for the next event. *Remember the Perth Cafť Days belong to everyone and if anyone wants to step forward to host a cafť day this will be appreciated by all those attending.

    Cheers,
    Grant

    Yes Grant,

Whole-heartedly support Andys comments. A great day with new friends doing something they enjoy at a great venue... and of course, an excellent commentary and pics of the day itself. I think you may have set a bit of a benchmark here Grant.

Heres to many more CS Cafe Days in W.A.

    Cheers to all,
    Mal.
