    CoffeeSnobs Roast-a-rama - Melbourne 1st Oct.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
For those members in Melbourne or just keen enough to travel we are planning a "roast-a-rama" for the 1st of October.

    What is a Roast-a-rama?

A day of roasting and cooling beans in as many whacky varied and different home-roasting devices that we can muster.

    Confirmed are:

    Imex CR100
    Hearthware Precision
    Hearthware i-Roast
    Hottop
    Stir Crazy
    Popper
    Gas fired Aldi Mezzo
(and pending on freight, the Gencafe should be here too!)

We need plenty more devices though.
Even if your roaster is in the list Im sure you have a slightly different technique and someone will learn from your methods.

The location has been supplied by the best coffee training venue in Australia, William Angliss Coffee Academy *and should be a great day out. *

We will be starting about 9:30 and running until we are sick of roasting (or out of beans). *We are also hoping to organise a film crew for the day to capture video of the event which will be a really cool resource for newbie roasters. *Ill shout a bag of interesting coffee to feed the roasters and any CSer roasting on the day will receive a DVD (when/if they are produced).

If anyone is flying into Melbourne for the day (Tullamarine or Avalon) let me know and Ill pick you up and/or deliver you to the airport if needed.

So... can you come and what will you bring?

    Ooh Ooh - Mr. Kotter..

    Ill be there.

    Ill definitely bring the Imex.
I can bring all the components of the BBQ roaster except for one thing - the BBQ (mine is fixed into bluestone at home. If there is any chance of a 2 or 4 burner BBQ with hood being there, let me know (Ive been thinking of buying a spare trolley BBQ but dont think I can swing it before Oct. 1st at this stage).

All should be OK as long as the BBQ itself has the slots for the rotisserie on left and right sides (which just about all BBQs have) and there is somewhere for me to rest the motor. IE: a lot of BBQs have a shelf on one or both sides.
The rod I use for the rotisserie is a composite of varying length pieces, so I should be able to make it fit just about any BBQ.

    I also need 240v power.
Ill bring the drum, a power reel, the motor and the hi-tech bucket it sits in, the DC adaptor and various bits and pieces required for roasting.

or something like that its got holes on each side and a shelf on one side (left) and a side burner
(right) with lid. it also has a glass front window which you can look thru. if you need it pm me

Can everyone who is coming to the roast-a-rama please vote in the above poll?
(and if you cannot make it change your vote)

We need numbers to help with the planning.

    Second that!

Really interesting to see the range of roasting contraptions in use.
Always great to chat to people whoe eyes DONT glaze over when you start to talk coffee to them.

Thanks to Andy and everyone else who made it happen.

Thanks to Chris and William Angliss as well! (Thats Chris N... and William Angliss. Not Chris Angliss and William Angliss... you get the idea :o )

What a great day the Roast-a-rama was. **:) *Thanks Andy and Chris for all the work, a great event not to be missed by all those interested in roasting.

In the next few days I am going to do my taste test on the Timor organic to see if there are any differences between the beans roasted in the Hottop and my heatgun roast. Colour is *identical so it should be a good indication.

Now if only my coffee making skills were consistent *etc * :-[

Just adding my thankyous to the list for Andy and Chris,
Had a great day and met lots of people passionate about coffee and coffee roasting.
Saw some great roasting techniques including Geekman3s heat gun method yielding 600GMS per batch and the beans looked an absolute treat.
Had way too much coffee such that I was going divergent on all 3 axes and waffling even more than usual!
Hope we can do somesuch again soon.

    Tim

Yeah it was a great day out at the Coffee Academy. Such a big turnout of CSrs and a whole lot of new faces to put to seemingly anonymous CS usernames.

Its great getting together to share and learn and I doubt anyone left without picking-up at least a couple of new tips and tricks, a good feed and some great coffee.

It was also good to see that I was the only one who managed to go into third crack. ::)

Thanks so much to Chris for all his tireless work (yet again) and Jill for allowing us to billow roasted coffee aroma in the Willaim Angliss courtyard.

With any luck we can get a similar session together one day and Chris has suggested a "real roaster tour" for our next get together prior to Christmas. We will post ideas and details as they come together.

I dropped in fairly late into the day, but still managed to taste a few roasts.
It was great to meet everyone and put some faces to online names. Thanks to those who made the day possible, Andy, Chris & Jill@Angliss and all those roaster owners. I still get a little numb when I think about the various contraptions that were lying around. Makes my foray into the world of home roasting more imminent...

I missed out! *:( *Seems I joined much too late, at least two interesting outings I missed out on! :(

This one would have been especially educational for me, so I wonder did the video happen? If so, is it possible to get a copy?

Yes, the roast-a-rama was a great day out and if there is enought interest in the new year we might do it again.

The video didnt happen on the day but we still want to produce one for just that reason... it is easier to see the devices in action then just describe em.

    stay tuned for details ;)
