Hello again to Perth CS Members!

This will be an opportunity to get together over here in Perth. It will be pretty much the same as the first cafe day back in June where Matt wowed us with his top rated bean blend.

It will be an Espresso BLIND Tasting. *

Each person will prepare espresso using a commercial Cimbali espresso machine. *A grinder will also be available ie. you will be roaster and barista for your own beans!

Everyone will taste and rate the espressos presented and there will be a small token (prize) awarded for the best espresso.

    Grant

Would love to come along Grant - I still have a lot to learn !

At the moment I have about 20 things lined up that I have to do on Saturday prior to a builder turning up on Monday, so Im not sure how I will squeeze it in.

Pencil me in though and if I can escape for an hour or so I will.

    Grant,
You can still count me in too. There is also a 75% chance of a caffeine addicted wife tagging along. Hope that is OK... let me know if this is going to make things a bit cramped.

    Goat,
Try and make the time as I learnt sooooo much on the first cafe day... Pete and all the CoffeeSnobers know their stuff!

Looking forward to it... I will bring the chocolate muffins!
    Now... what to roast?...

Re: Perth Cafe Day - October 1st 1pm

    Everyone:

It was a small group Willem, Matt (and his wife Sue), Lincoln (who bought my Silvia), myself and Peter.

As usual though we all seemed to click, talked coffee and learned a lot from each other while enjoying each others company.

    A great day!

Roast wise, my roast garnered top marks along with a roast from Bio-Beans (who are advertising on this forum). We believe that this is a single origin Peruvian but all we know is that it is Peruvian. It could possibly be more than one bean. It is Fair Trade, Organic and to top it off advertised as handled only by women! Wow. Men are allowed to drink it though. Peter donated this from his shop stocks.

Overall though no real killer roasts like the first cafe day. I think that this might be due to the fact that no one used any real gourmet beans like the Yemeni Ismaili this time.

My roast in fact was just an inexpensive single origin Zimbabwean bean sourced locally here in Perth. I was curious what people thought of it as I was quite impressed. It is a compliment that a relatively inexpensive S.O. bean can garner such good marks.

The worst roast was some coffee I got off a local roaster, Silvana by European Foods. It was OK but pretty average and a bit harsh. Examination of the blend showed what looked like huge beans, possibly Robusta, some arabica beans and some nasty little pea type beans that Peter reckons they use as a cheap filler type bean. An obviously rather cheap blend done to a price but still palatable.

Thanks again to Peter for hosting the event and providing his expertise and some beans!

Re: Perth Cafe Day - October 1st 1pm

Glad you like the Café Femenino *:) The bean is Peruvian and single origin. As were just starting out with BioBean Coffee - we wont be blending until I get more experience in understanding blending *::) Ive been taught that blending is often used by companies to introduce poor quality beans along with good in a coffee, and then this percentage of low quality beans gradually increases over time.....

All our beans are single origin and Fairtrade, although that means were limiting our selection quite a bit, were trying to build this business on a ethical foundation, so Ill have to see how it pans out. A roaster from Germany who came out to give me a hand getting started was very impressed with the quality of the Fairtrade beans were using, which is a good sign coming from someone whos been roasting for more than 20 years :)

The Femenino has taken me a few weeks to get the roast right for, its a little trickier than the PNG or East Timor varieties I started with , the texturing of the beans isnt correct until very late in the roast - which leaves you with only a small window of opportunity to dump the beans before they hit 2nd crack.

    Thanks Grant,
A tasty roast and another successful day.. well done ;)
Suzie had a great time too, esp when Peter made her prepare the "all girl" Cafe Femenino... pity she still cant get to sleep *:o

    Hi Ben,
Congrats on the Cafe Femenino.. very tasty!
Sue was so impressed she purchased some to take home.. quite significant considering she likes to point out the >40kg of greens I have in my bean cupboard. Im sure that when you get on your feet at BioBean there would be a few very interested CoffeeSnobers keen to come and have a little stickybeak.
Ill bring the chocolate cookies! ::)

    Cheers,
    Matt

    Ben/Mary:

It seems it is my burden in life to organise these cafe days!
    ;D

Seriously they are always fun and I havent had one yet that hasnt gone well.

If you are up to hosting a cafe day then that is much appreciated. So far we have had them at Supreme Machines and at my place.

Give me a definite date and I can organise around that.

A theme needs to be worked out also as we try to make a blind cupping only every second one. One suggestion might be to use just one bean and get everyone to roast it and see what happens.

Sounds good although its been more than 20 years since I milked a cow :)
If we do get a visit to BioBean off the ground... maybe we should make Fairtrade the bean of the moment.. (if you have any.. or at very least certified organic?).
    Just an idea,
    Matt

Well, were up for hosting a café day at our place in the hills. The 13th of November would be a good date for us - But Im not sure what format you usually use for these gatherings?
Weve just got ourselves a La Cimbali Junior - from Supreme Coffee Machines *8-) - So theres no need to bring anything except a plate of biscuits if you like!

    Ben:

November 13th sounds good. There isnt necessarily much to organise although we need to have a theme.
