    NSW Coffee/Roasting Day 4th November 2006

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

thought I would try to start a thread that continues on from Crazy Popper thread to see if we cant try to get roasting day in Sydney off the ground or something like that. I am a novice as I only purchased the popper today and it is still in the box, So expressions of interest might be a good place to start? Maybe some sponsors might like to be involved? Di Bartoli? Who knows the possibilities are endless. Lets put some thoughts together.

So there is atleast 7 of us so seems like a goer. I wonder if some people from other states can offer suggestions as to what they have found most beneficial from CS gatherings so we can have something to work with to try and identify what the day could look like. Venues will be a thing to try and work out too I suppose. Unfortunately I am in a unit so cant really offer my place as an option. If we decide on a venue than perhaps we can start to talk dates that would work for the venue.

Well that certainly stopped things in a big way. I am sure it may be a big deal to offer the use of your place for a venue but maybe we can work something out maybe even a sponsor doing a CS member only day or something like that? Maybe we need to start smaller and just have a cafe meet first for Sydney locals so we can meet each other first and see that none of us have two heads or anything (sorry too anyone who does ;)). Any suggestions would be a good thing at this point.

I would happily offer my place, however Im in the Southern Highlands, it might be bit too far for people to travel. I also have a lack of outdoor roasting facilities , ie - no garage or shed.

Im happy to help out with setting up, supplies, or in any other way I can. :)

Well Viviane road trips have been hot topics around here lately ;). We will see if there are any other options and than go from there.

Hey Brett, Id love to offer my place as a venue, but, like yourself I live in a unit and dont have the room. I agree that a meet would be good fun. It wouldnt be too hard to cover the city (Mecca) and the inner east & west within a morning. Perhaps we could do a blast through the city and then all go for a nice cruise out to Cronulla and go to Grind?

I havent been there yet but being an escapee from the Shire I can just imagine how nice it would be to sip a nice ristretto or something with a view of the beach.

Im about 1 1/4 hours drive from Burwood, it would need to be byo extension leads to roast out on the deck, and wed be hoping for good weather, but youd all be welcome :)

It would be interesting to see who would be keen to head to the Southern Highlands for this potential event? Car pooling might be in order perhaps and from recent threads coffee related road trips are the latest hot topic. I would be prepared to make the trip for one and offer my car for car pooling purposes. Probably depends where everyone lives in the greater Sydney area I suppose. I am in Ryde district for one.

    Ps. Thanks for offering Viviane

Re: Possibilties for Sydney Coffee/Roasting day..

It would be a lot of fun. For anyone who is put off by travelling to the country, Im in the town of Moss Vale. From Sydney, you head for the M5, keep going past Cambelltown, take the Mittagong turnoff, follow the signs to Moss Vale. Once youre right in Mossy, turn off the main road, two right turns and park in front of my house. Not difficult at all :)

Id be suggesting either the 5th or 12th of November.

The 5th and the 12th are no good for me. As a youth pastor I have responsibilities on Sunday mornings until about 12pm so if it is a Sunday it would have to be about 1 or so. I would imagine this probably wouldnt suit everyone but if Sunday morning works for everyone else I will just have to pass on this opportunity which is cool. Do these dates and location work for everyone?

Do we want this to be only about roasting? If people want to bring their machines/grinders, I have enough bench space to set a few up, though switching them all on at the same time might be an issue - espresso races would probably be out :P

Re: Possibilties for Sydney Coffee/Roasting day..

Woo Hoo Viviane - great to see more gals with garages hosting CS gatherings *8-) In response to a previous question in this thread about what CSers did at gatherings, the one we had in Hobart was great. We had about 7 participants and 2mcm, most people brought their own machines and grinders or doubled up if they had come together. I made sure there was plenty of power outlets, bulk bottled water and lots of milk and everyone just went for it. There was lots of mystery roasts to try and trouble shooting difficult pours and variables.

Our day was quite structured given Chris did a tailored training session on pulling shots and some milk texturing. While I learnt heaps from that part, it was also very cool meeting other CSers, having a look at different machines and grinders in action, getting to have a play and sharing info etc. We didnt really do much roasting except to try out the Hottop that had just arrived, but roasting would have been great with more time and lots of different beans.

Sounds like you are going to have an awesome day in the Southern Highlands - look forward to the post meet posts *:)

Seriously - I think we are going to have to organise a national CS get together pretty soon, though im not sure if there is a toilet block big enough with that many power points!!! * ;D

No can do Fatboy. Hawaii wont allow any green beans into the state. To just pass through on a plane beans must be sealed in an airtight container. :(

So far have we have Viviane, Paolo and myself for the 4th at Mossy any other takers?

Obviously we can tailor it to what everyone wants with people having input with different blends that they like and that sort of thing. Would be interesting if we had a range of different machines and grinders to see what they like in action as well I would think. As well as different roasting techniques.

If the Sydney Coffee Roasting Day goes ahead as discussed, , my partner Mary will be partaking in the roasting extavaganza too.

We will be bringing the trusty Imex, an extension cord and plenty of green beans.

I too am looking forward to seeing other peoples techniques and learn plenty. I would love to see a genuine Coretta in action. I live in hopes!

I have done hundreds of roasts...but hey! I have only been going on what works and what I have read. I would love to learn more so that my shots can improve...always open to that.

    Cant wait!

I have been wanting to check out a few other options having only really been going to Tobys at Chippendale and now Sea Bar.

I just read about the NSW roasting day, and would like to participate. I live at Ulladulla, so for me, Moss Vale is closer than Sydney. My Imex recently gave up, after about five years, but I would be happy to bring along a popper and some beans.
