isnt july 1 a saturday?
Session now full
After the success of Roastarama last year, we have organised an advanced roasting and blending session on the morning of SUNDAY 2 JULY.
Hazel de los Reyes of Coffee Alchemy in Sydney is 05 Australian Champion Barista and also 06 NSW Champion Barista. Not only is Hazel a incredibly talented barista, she is an expert in blend creation.
This session is exclusive to CS members
The plan is that we all all bring our roasting contraptions as we did for Roastarama #1. Hazel and Jill will run a cupping session of a number of origins supplied for the day. Hazel will discuss the creation of great blends with the group. With Hazels expert direction, we will each go off to roast the components of the first ever CS Roastarama blend.
Of course, everybody will get to share in the spoils of the event! *8-)...If it works, we will publish here the secret ingredient list and instructions *;).
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn and participate in a unique, inexpensive session. Join us for what should be an amazing experience, and yet another wonderful opportunity to live coffee!
Places are strictly limited (Max 12 participants) and the charge for the session will be $70. Grab your spot via PM here or email me- email@example.com.
isnt july 1 a saturday?
ooops...make that July 2 :-[
This should be an awesome day out at the Coffee Academy. *
I cant wait :)
If any CSrs are coming from interstate let me know your flight times... we should be able to grab you from either airport (Tulla or Avalon) ;)
Sweet, Im in!
FYI all the day is nearly full- 2 places left at 9.30am Sat 13 May- get in quick or miss out *8-)
2 spots still left......any final takers?
Id love to fill one of those spots but my arms refuse to cooperate, silly things. :DOriginally Posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1147391057/0#6 date=1147856827
Java "Flapping hard but going nowhere" phile
Oh how I wish I could come! Im even in Melbourne for a wedding that weekend. No chance of me bringing a roasting contraption though, cant see my husband with the popper on his lap on the plane (actually theres probably a law against that in case i tried to hijack the plane using hot air and flying kernals).
Im up for a spot if theres still one left Chris.
Ill need to use my roasting contraption (Popper) out-doors though.
Alrighty then...the group so far is:
Martin Maszczak (swig)
Julie Newman (CS representative female on the day ;D)
Appreciate if all participants could pm or email me with all your details so that we can invoice you...
regards to all- should be a fantastic day *:o 8-)
There should be another place remaining; unfortunately I should be in Brisbane then! Miss out on visiting Hazel, but Ill get to visit the guys at Pioneer!
I confirm that this session is now full. FYI all those attending, Ill supply talk coffee banking details and you can do a direct credit to me. Ill pay the academy for us and you will be issued with a receipt/tax invoice for your $$$ on the day....makes things quick and easy!
Should be a great day....very exciting!!!!!!
For those who have missed out on this learn to blend session, Hazel is running another session with a slightly different bent on the Saturday morning at 10 am..
Session description is as follows.
Reconstructing the Espresso: Hazel de los Reyes presents a 4 hour workshop on Coffee- from bean to blend to cup.
You will taste some espresso origins roasted by Hazel at Coffee Alchemy and using some innovative techniques and rules, along with yor palate and knowledge of coffee characteristics, create your own espresso blend....
One place remains at $50 in this Saturday morning session run by Hazel. *
Drop me a line if youd like to go....First in, best dressed ;-)
Lucky last spot....any takers?Originally Posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1147391057/0#13 date=1150675982
A great and fun (if not wet) day was had by all.
Ive posted some phone-cam pics I took (yes that was me pointing the anoying camera at everyone :) ) up on Flickr if anyones interested.
These are straight from the phone and some are a bit blurry, but I was in the middle of roasting a batch when I took most of them, so I had one eye on the popper too ;)
Please add comments, names and descriptions to these pics.
PS: If you are in one of these pics and would rather it not be shown up on the intar-web-thingy, then let me know and I will take it down (or blur you out, like on the news ;D )
It was a great day out, thanks to Jill, Hazel and of course Chris for putting a great day together.
Also a great big thanks to the coffee heads - its your passion for improved results that allows us all to learn!
I look forward to many more similar events.
Well done indeed. Thanks Chris, for the effort in organizing the day.
And to The Learned Ladies, Jill and Hazel, for imparting a bunch of their valuable knowledge.
I also suspect a certain site administrator who shall remain nameless, (but whos initials are Andy Freeman), went to quite a bit of trouble to aid the cause also.
What a terrific day.
Being fairly new, it was great to meet a few fellow Melbourne CSers face to face.
It was a genuine pleasure.
Yep - thanks all for organising an informative yet enjoyable day.
The blending experiment was fun, but I wouldnt pin the roasting/blending reputation of Hazel, Chris, and Andy on the concoction that ended up being the snob blend. *If I recall the blend ended up using the leftover beans with roughly the following proportions:
1/2 or so Brazil Daterra
1/4 or so Sumatra Mandl
a few dashes (up to 1/4) PNG peaberry (was there 2 different roast profiles of this?)
a few dashes (up to 1/4) PNG Sihereni
It was good fun and good learning all the way. I now know my palate needs plenty of work! Loved seeing, smelling and hearing all the roasting devices at work and it was great to meet fellow coffee people and talk crack!
Tim (Lochness): Re the photos . . . can you give me more hair?

On a positive note:
Well done Chris, Andy, Jill and of course Hazel for yet another superbly organised day.
Great to meet some new faces/names as well as catch up with some now-familiar ones.
I forgot to take home some "snob" blend after all that...bummer!
Did take home some of Hazels Ipanema tho and put it straight thru the Junior... twas yummie too.
Wow, sounds like a cool session.
2MuchChris, or anyone really, is there an equivalent academy in NSW that has a focus on coffee, that isnt just teaching high-schoolers how to froth milk? Itd be awesome to have the facilities and someone with the passion of Jill, Chris and Hazel to do something similar here in NSW. And Id really love to go through a "refresher" or "advanced" espresso course and work on things like cupping, perhaps even get qualifications.....
Then I could throw in the IT job and become a barista full-time.... ah, weekends, always great for dreamin
The equivalent would probably be the Sydney Coffee Academy at Ryde TAFE. If I remember correctly, theyre using Futurmat machines. They also have a green bean coffee roaster. Point of contact would be Patrick Beckitt on 9448-6140.
Thanks Nunu and Chris.
I found Syd Coffee Academy info here - http://www.sydneycoffeeacademy.com.au/
Ill drop Hazel a line and find details about where she runs the session in Sydney.
No worries Poundy.....how about an alternative.....you get a few mates (3-7 o them), come down to Melb for a day or two....book the training room and me at the academy (very price effective way of doing things) and we cover EXACTLY what you would like to work on? 8-)...
Just a thought...
And thats a great alternative too ! Hmm, perhaps Id just better pay more attention to the "coffee news" folder here - I usually avoid reading the rehashed news articles, and only stumbled on this "event" item last night. Maybe then Ill get a bite at an event thats on without me organising hypothetical "mates" who are interested in coffee like me ;)
Ok. Ive been drinking the results of our blending experiment. Very nice. Great job everyone. Only thing is Im finding it blondes rather early, so Im short-extracting from a double basket to get a good single shot. I blame my own under-roasted PNG Peaberry for this.
How are others finding it?
Or, to potentially cut costs further, you beg Hazel to use her place and fly Chris and I up to Sydney 8-)Originally Posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1147391057/15#26 date=1151883635
