Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ill be up for Aromafest this year....and for once have the luxury of having a look rather than being on the other end of a group handle all day...as the Bean Alliance will not be exhibiting....

I will do a couple of hours (just for kicks) with the crew from ECM...

Hopefully we will have great weather and a whole lotta fun!

    Who else is going?

Ill be there. A meeting point will be appropriate methinks.

Ill more than likely be taking the train (shock horror), so expect me to be a few hours late, even though Ive left 2 hours early to accomodate Cityrails perfect on-time record...

Yeah, Im thinking about it... would be nice if the weather is as good as last year.

    details below....

    ===================

The Rocks Aroma Coffee Festival is a coffee-lover’s paradise. The festival is considered the largest coffee festival in the Southern hemisphere, featuring the smallest of roasters next to bigger coffee houses, all offering their roasts and blends to the public for as little as $1 per cup. There is also a Domestic Coffee Machine Expo, coffee workshops, a Turkish Coffee House, plus live music and entertainment.

From 10am–5pm on Sunday 23 July, visitors to Aroma will experience a baristic bonanza as more than 25 artisan coffee roasters showcase their blends and brews.

Consume as many $1 sample cups as you like and compare the different roasts as you wander through Sydney’s heritage quarter.

Whether it’s a plunger, percolator or serious coffee machine that brews your daily cup, the mysteries of grind, dose and infusion will be revealed in a series of free demonstrations and workshops by Australia’s leading food and coffee experts at the ASN Theatrettes, on the corner of Hickson Road and George Street.

The latest domestic coffee equipment will be on display for visitors to Aroma to touch, see, try and buy, at the Domestic Coffee Machine Expo. Expert demonstrators will profile a wide range of models in Customs Hall on the upper level of the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

For some Middle Eastern flair, dip into the Turkish Coffee House with belly dancers, middleeastern music and coffeepots made from hand-hammered copper and brass. Enjoy strong Turkish coffee, brewed the traditional way since the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, while reclining on colourful cushions.

Smooth jazz tunes, laid back lounge and other earthy beats will complement the coffee aromas wafting through the air. Bands will perform live throughout the day, at the Overseas Passenger Terminal Forecourt, First Fleet Park and The Rocks Square.

The Rocks Aroma Coffee Festival is presented by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.

    Chris,

I was the guy you made just one more coffee for at the end of the day last year. Very good of you, after the grinder dramas you went through. Hopefully this year will be much less stressful.

Hrmmm ... Im trying to decide ... comes down to money for me. If Im up in Sydney for Aroma and the ICTF, Ill probably be pulling shots with Veneziano and the Barista Guild. I think that Veneziano are driving Daves Linea and a San Marino up, but I still think that these events are always challenging to make good coffee at ...

Chris, if Ive got time and Im up there, Id love to jump on an ECM with you. I loved the steaming on the barista comp models!

    Cheers,

Should be a goer, Luca. BTW- the comp. Veneziano was tweaked in quite a few ways including restrictors and a prototype "secret mens business" wand tip....I have had my machine hotted up in exactly the same way.....and I like it! 8-)

I could be up for that Framey, i do my beers in champagne bottles so the logistics of carrying those around for too long could be daunting.
id say ill be driving in, but if we just make it one longneck, that will still give you a chance to try an All Grain beer. PM me with your beer preferences and ill dig out something youll like.
    Sorry for OT peoples.

No worries. Im also into homebrew, but ofc not as technical nor experienced. I do have some Mead that I brewed a few years ago, and am willing to bring that along for people to try.

And just to keep it coffee related, I can also bring a bit of homeroast too.

Have to pick a spot to meet...

I just did a quick count and the Victorians traveling-up to the Aroma nearly out number the locals.

    Could this be true?

I will definitely stop by the Barista Guild stand myself, (I sent an email to AASCA ages ago but never got a reply! :-?) so will make myself known to any Coffee Snobs. Ill wear a pink John Deere cap, so then you can recognise me! :D

30lb? Nah. If you find me in the crowd Ill show you the real baristas handshake.

Look for the guy with beard, ponytail & (probably) caffeine t-shirt. That, or the alt.coffee one. Or the Sweet Marias Skunk. Decisions, decisions..

Also, if I can get time off work Ill be either @ the ICTF show or doing the cafe crawl.

Oh, and Ill have my CB with me, set to channel 23.

    See you there

Well, Daves linea underwent an overhaul to fit it with new 0.8mm jets and has been driven up to Sydney along with a few mazzers and a mahlkoenig. Im looking forward to this - Ive never really done the high volume outdoors thing, but saw the sweat dripping off 2mcms brow last year, as well as the smoke coming off the grinders! Should be fun!

Funny as hell cause Klaus Thomsen dropped by Veneziano today and all that the guys had to use was the tweaked 20 year old San Marino and the brasilia competition grinder ... apparently he thought it performed pretty well, though.

The Veneziano Stall is number 5, whilst the Champions Stall is number 32. You can take a look a the schedule for the presentations here:

    http://www.therocks.com/content/dyncontent.cfm?pg=100705&div=100013

Dave is doing a signature drink presentation at 1pm, followed by a latte art demo by Scott Callaghan at 2:30. Amusingly, in the other theatrette, the Gee brothers will be running a session on understanding coffee blends, followed by a session from Kenneth Davids.

    Hope to see yall around,

    Luca

Im gonna hang with the ECM guys (this year without sweat on brow) and I intend to pull not a single shot if I can possibly manage it! Will be nice to be on the other side of the bench for a change this year!

Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

Well I have to say the weather was awesome! Nothing short of a brilliant Winters morning. Unfortunately this atttracted the crowds and really by 11:30 the lines were too long and I couldt be arsed lining up for ages for a shot. Not to say that I didnt enjoy it, I did. I had a good look around and sampled a few of the espresso suppliers at random. Most of the players from last year were present with the same stalls and the same equipment wholesalers were present in the hall.

I had expected (or hoped) a bigger range of machines to be on show, or a bigger number of espresso machine retailers to be present trying to flog equipment - this would have made it a bit more interesting for me anyway.

Truthfully I wasnt impressed with any of the espressos I bought (didnt get to try Veneziano or Tobys due to the size of the lines). However I hung around the ECM stand like a bad smell and was rewarded with a VERY NICE ristrettos from a Giotto Premium :). One of the baristi manning an ECM (roaster from Danes - sorry forget his name) was more than happy to talk shop and take his time to extract some brilliant shots. He said to come back later for another so after a few disappointing bought espressos I did and was rewarded again. Anyway, Id have to say that was the highlight of the day for sure. My mate with me was 80% sold on a Giotto before the day and 110% sold afterwards. I think if ECM had been selling on the day he would have walked out with one under his arm.

The most amusing event was when we had a sample made from a Saeco by a young lass who offered to make myself and my mate an espresso. She proceeded to pour one shot for my friend and when that was done stuck my cup under the same portafiller and poured another without replenishing it . Suffice to say I politely thanked her for her time with cup in hand and did not return.

Anyway, I had a good time. Top day for a trip to the city. The crowds were a pain, but not unexpected. Whether or not Ill go next year - well Im not sure.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Its me. Your Aroma festival "mate". I was so inspired by that last hit from the Giotto that I had to join up with the snobs.

Ill verify everything Matt. I would drink Fijian Kava again before having another coffee from the Saeco!

ECM has never let me down at the aroma festival and now that I have a kitchen to put one in I am in the market. Just need to find a good deal.......

Dr V, if youre after Giotto (nice choice by the way!) then head on over to the "Coffee Hardware for Sale" area and check out what the site sponsors can offer. I am sure Chris (2muchcoffeeman) and Attilio (fresh_coffee) can sort you out appropriately - they both have FANTASTIC service and great snobs member pricing. You cant go wrong - I didnt buy off them, but youll see some of the great feedback theyve got in some of the posts in that forum as well.
    Enjoy !
Poundy (oh, dont forget youll want a grinder, Im sure Matty G will have told you that!)

We too were very impressed with one of the guys at the ECM stall, youngish guy, glasses, longish hair... anyway, he was heaps friendly, pulled a good shot, and happily tried to locate Chris (2mcm) for us, so we could thank him in person for our Giotto... no luck there.

Was disappointed that there werent more machine manufacturers to view, other than ECM I couldnt see anything at all that interested me...

Standing in the long queues for coffee with a pram didnt work for me at all, so I just sent my husband on dashes to buy whole beans, and well just try them all out at home.

Beautiful weather made it such a nice day out.

Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

My day was shortened by a big night the night before and a few other chores to complete in the morning. The lines at the stalls seemed twice as long as last year, so i only grabbed two coffees! the first was from Karmee as we arrived (due to the shortest of the huge lines in the area) we aksed for a piccolo type size, which was essentially a 3/4 filled cup i guess.. and the result was quite a nice coffee. i was happy with it and they gave you a little choccy egg too!!!
the second was bad to say the least.. it was nearing the end of the day, 4pm i think and we jumped in the line at incas. watching the pour.... even swmbo loked at me and whispered that cant be good ... it was essentially a 10-15 second yellow water shot. No need to describe anymore, unfortunately that one went straight in the bin... im hoping for their sake it was just the end of the day and baristas were tired, but still.

we also squeezed in for scott callaghans latte art demonstration. It was good if not a little extended as we had to sit on the stairs, people got to ask a few questions at the end and there were a few laughs. nothing overly insightful as i think he realised the crowd was made up mostly of people with limited knowledge (as he did a show hands to gauge the crowd). His intro DVD was pretty cool. and i also had a litttle shudder, when scott had just finished steaming his milk and instead of the usual sharp tap on the bench and a little swirl of the jug, he banged it 3 or 4 times quite hard on the roof of the Giotto...! he later explained that he was lent the machine... so it started to make sense.. hahaha.

All in all... too many people for the amount of stalls, so they could probably try and arrange more roasters/stalls or egt some extra machines at each stall.
finished the day off with some pork belly and bavarian wheat beers at the lowenbrau. yum.

    KoNG

Ps. i have to say sorry to Framey, for not getting the beer swap done. i arrived late and had to park a long way from the rocks, so carrying the bottles around wasnt an option. Unfoertunately framey had to leave early. Anyways well get the swap done asap.

Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

It was a beautiful day, which sadly enough, drew huge crowds.

Only had one cuppa, down at the champions tent, prepared by Hazel. They were still setting the tent and machines up, and there was already a huge queue for Klaus (reigning WBC champion) on the Synesso. When the second machine came online, I jumped into that queue. Hazel was frantically trying to dial in the grinder. I was in no hurry, and was rewarded with a very nice shot. It was a double, because the single was being a pain in the arse. Thanks Hazel!

If I remember correctly, the coffee used was Numero Uno, roasted by Dean Morgan out in Emu Plains. Very nice indeed. The Synesso was using Byron Bay coffee, Id heard it was decent, but not spectacular.

Walked past the throng of people queueing up for a look at some toasters or sandwich presses and watched a little of the Latte Art Comp, some of the competitors were really nervous.

Got to meet Andy and Chris (2mcm), along with Framey and FC. Nice bunch of blokes.

Ended up at Lowenbrau with a plate of cheese spaetzle and a litre of dunkel weizen.

Dr. V. Welcome to the dark side, or are we the light side?

DR eh? When did you get that medical degree ;)

Yes I look forward to the day you get the new addition to the family. Ill be round with a bag of home roast for sure. I was very tempted to trade up yesterday, but CFO made it clear that if a new appliance is to be bought its going to be a LCD TV first :(

Ive already forwarded some of the deals 2MCM was offering on the old classic from Talk Coffee so I would certainly give them and other sponsors a go. No B.S and they will back it up with heaps of advice, which you will definitely need!

    Cheers,

    Matt

    Hi

I am trying to find a floor plan of the 2006 festival. Can you help. I am looking for the guys who were selling a new thick hot chocolate. Have not seen the product again. I do not think i have the correct name of the product.

    Regards

    Steven

I went to the Catering Trade Fair last year at Homebush and there were some guys there selling a very thick hot choc. Ive still got the program and some things from that show, I could have a dig for the name if you like.

I dont think you can handle seeing me twice in one lifetime Chris.

The ECM display always has a huge queue. Very hard to get in if you dont get there early.

Closing down the only public toilets in the building last year was a bit of a downside as well.

I managed to get to the ECM guys with no problem and the loos were working too.

Ill probably be going to give Di Bartoli a hand.

Might get a spare minute to say hi then Chris.

At around midday security closed off the toilets. If it was for scheduled maintenance, I cant say. The whole upstairs area was chockers when I was up there, you could hardly move. I watched a bit of the latte art comp, then headed off to Lowenbrau.
