    Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Over the last 6 months we have been working towards setting up the CoffeeSnobs Roastery and finally the dream is a reality.

Last year we bought a 10 kg Has Garanti roaster from site sponsor Coffee Roasters Australia and after months of planning, building, fitting, testing and jumping local council hoops we can now show you inside the Roastery.

Ohhh, its such a pretty beast.

In this picture you can see the "Coffee Art" wall, wet area (sink and hand washing facilities), somewhere to sit, the all important “bar fridge”, the Presso, grinder and bean storage area.

Here we have the site computer, bean scales, bag grinder, heat sealer and under bench storage. *The cardboard boxes contain a large variety of valve coffee bags from CoffeeParts. *

Another angle of the roaster and a view of some of the extensive stock of beans that I have bought from previous BeanBays.

Freshly roasted beans hit the cooling tray... Hmmm coffee

In the words of the late Douglas Adams, “Don’t Panic!”, the “CoffeeSnobs Green” offerings in BeanBay will remain the same for home roasters.

CoffeeSnobs Brown is for members that don’t have time to roast or cannot keep-up with demand and would like to purchase previous BeanBay beans roasted to order on a commercial drum roaster. * *

CoffeeSnobs Brown will work similar to our current BeanBay system. *At any given time we hope to have at least 4 coffees on offer, 10kg of each bean will be available to purchase, as each member buys beans the sliding scale will show how much remains. *When the coffee quantity gets to zero they will be roasted and shipped direct to your door anywhere in Australia.

With CoffeeSnobs Brown, you should be getting your roasted coffee so fresh that some varieties might require an extra couple of days of rest before using.

I’m really excited about this venture coming to life and expect that a lot of non-roasting members will be too.

    Andy.

That looks great. There have been a few members asking if they can buy their beans roasted, this should look after them nicely. :)

Thanks for sharing the excitement CSrs. *

I would also like to offer a huge thanks to our wonderful site moderators that have shouldered the extra burden over the last few months while I have been intermittently absent while working at the roastery. *Yes, the mods can keep a secret and were a great source of encouragement while we were building. *We couldn’t have got here without you! THANKS!

;D Very exciting - this will open up a new area of snobbery to include those who lack the time/space/inclination to roast their own!

Oooh, Great Idea.....I havent been here for a while - and havent roasted much either since my little boy arrived. So I am definatley interested in some of this! Ive having trouble finding good roasted beans.

Will you be sending email notifactions when the "brown bay" is open every month? Or is it going to be a regular thing?

Woohoo; its out in the open!

I must admit that part of me is disappointed that the roaster wasnt cobbled together from various BBQs, steel bins and desk fans, but I will forgive you.

Off topic but.... The 1kg roaster go out at circa $6k + freight + GST (think $7k)

Will you be sending email notifactions when the "brown bay" is open every month? Or is it going to be a regular thing?
We are hoping that CoffeeSnobs Brown (BrownBay has been suggested by Fatboy) will always have some beans available and as one origin sells out we will offer-up another.

The actual working will be fine tuned to ensure that everyone gets the freshest coffee and the most choice without having to wait too long to get it.

We will send an email when BeanBay gets its first stock of brown beans but after that the only member notifications will be with the monthly green bean update.

Well I have already modified the cooling tray to take a double volume fan... cools in half the time now.

So while there is no real need for a HG, the desire to modify is still overwhelming.

Have you got a price on what the Brown beans are going to sell for on average?
Also will you be doing only SO roasts or blends.

Will you be offering a Starter pack of Brown Beans. I have already got my Green Bean Starter Pack but a Brown Bean starter pack would also be good?

    Andy,

If you also did blends in the CS Brown, this would help us newbie roasters with your templates as you will. We could see what beans go together to create enhanced flavours. I myself wouldnt have a clue as to what bean varieties go together but if you could show us the way to ultimate blending passions we could taste your offerings then try to recreate this at home.

Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.

Thanks all... yes, as you would expect Im more than a little excited too.

Brown Starter packs will be offered and CoffeeSnobs Brown beans will be available in 200gm, 500gm, 1kg and 3kg lots.

Unlike the green beans for home roasters, CoffeeSnobs Brown will be a commercial venture and will have pricing to suit.

This will allow us to continue to offer the same great green beans and with any luck at an even lower price in the future.

More details on the actual pricing later in the week but I can tell you that it will range from retail to wholesale depending on the size of the packaging so if you know a local cafe that could do with some great CS coffee let them know where to look next month.

    ;-)

Fantastic idea, Andy, and a great, neat setup. Being able to buy freshly-roasted quality beans will be such a boon for many snobs without the facility to do it themselves.

An obvious and marvellous advancement to this ever-improving site.

Thanks Robusto. I thought it was obvious and marvellous too but the bank manager is still on the fence. ;) Now I just need to give him a shove.

    Lucinda,
Im not sure. NZ has some very strict import laws and I know green beans looked "too hard" to export.

Worth following-up down the track though.

Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.

    Hey Andy,

Following up on the NZ comment.

I recently took back some green beans for the old man who I sucked into home roasting.

There are two mechanisms of getting the beans in:

    (1) You either require an import permit (I do not know how hard this is to get).

    (2) Or they can be imported with an inspection at the point of entry.

As long as there is no biological activity - which would be unlikely given that AQIS would have approved them, then it is fine to take the beans in.

Sending roasted beans should be absolutely no drama.

Having said that, everything is easier to do when you are carrying the beans in person rather than via posting them. But I am sure that a phone call to customs in NZ could deal with many of these issues.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that getting green beans in NZ isnt easy.

There is almost no internet product available from my searches.

And the local roasters generally have only a few mainstream varieties for sale - none of these fancy pants Monsooned Malabar and Nicaraguan beans and stuff.

Its an untapped market for some lucky punter...given that the uptake of coffee in NZ is fairly phenomenal, given by the number of good cafes in random rural areas.

Sick of congrats? No way Rolley!

Its great to share the excitement of a new project with fellow roasters. The whole idea is to "fill in the gap" so that people that dont have the time to roast can still enjoy the awesome BeanBay beans and dont have to settle for supermarket coffee.

I would hope that anyone already roasting green beans continues to do so because as we all know thats the best way to get perfect results that suit your own tastes.

...which is why most of us started roasting in the first place!

Well organised, immaculate in fact. Well done!

The Has Garanti is a seriously cool machine. I gave Bens machine a thorough going over and it is one heavy duty piece of kit that will outlive all of us.

Just thought Id jump in here given Im an ex-kwi. *Green beans ARE almost impossible to get, however if you talk to the owner of Altezano in khyber pass, Auckland, you might just be in luck.

Also, in terms of sending roasted beans to/from NZ, ts no problem at all as long as theyre in a sealed bag. * Regularly get mom to send me over a couple of kilo bags of [s]cuban[/s] "house blend". *However.. * now that Andy is roasting... * *smile* *I can finally get decent coffee in Oz!

    WOOOHOO!!!! * GO ANDY!!!!!! *
