Ive already told Ofra Ill give it a shot.
So add me to your list.
On behalf of the good people at Di Bartoli, Im looking for people whod be interested in taking part in a Barista Jam at the Aroma Festival (The Rocks, Sunday June 22). Its going to be a bit of fun, with our great leader, Andy, having agreed to act as judge, and Di Bartoli offering a Naked PF and a $50 voucher for the winner; as well as a Coffeelab design tamper courtesy of Talk Coffee.
It will be a pretty simple affair- you jump behind one of the machines Di Bartoli are bringing for demonstration, and make a couple of coffees. Everything youll need will be within reach.
Points will be allocated for:
a. Espresso Extraction
b. Milk coffee presentation
The catch is that you have about 5-10 minutes, and will be assigned a machine/grinder (and all the other bits and pieces) at random *;) So judging will be based on the coffee, and how well youve coped with an unfamiliar machine. If weve got enough people, well have a few rounds, and then a final shoot-out.
The jam will run at 12noon!
So, if youre thinking this sounds like a bit of fun, reply here or PM me!

I hear the judge will award bonus points to anyone who can pour a CS logo.
Should be a blast.
think someone has at least etched it Andy... well, nearly...
So... I expect that because you posted in this thread you have just entered the DiBartoli CS Barista comp too!
Andy, dont forget...if I make it, you have to taste it!
Sure, Ill have a go...might even regale you with one of my special "looks like a lumpy spud" latte artworks
You might make all the "pro baristas" next-door nervous!
I bet they have all forgottem how to do lumpy spuds.
oi , I did not see latte art mentioned!!
I am still wasting enough milk to feed a third world country every day..........true.
Ok, so far its
Come on people, itll be a blast!
Oooh, Oooh, if no one else enters I have a chance of coming third!Originally Posted by mwatt link=1183709088/0#10 date=1183887690
No mate, ive seen YOUR art pics, mine make yours look like Da Vinci.
just a few little efforts of mine.......true!!! 8-) ::)
see no probs Dennis.......
true i did it, i did, true ::)
Judging criteria will be far more than just art (although those pics of "yours" look reasonable Coastal Coffee)
We should have something tangible soon but I would expect a bias on the actual espresso shot because its the base requirement of all great coffee drinks.
Quality, process, attention to detail, speed and presentation.
(in roughtly that order of value)
Pretty drinks are "cute", great drinks are better!
So practice dialing in a grinder, getting a great shot and not making the milk scream for mercy and you have the makings of an Aroma Fest star.
Id sooo love to have a crack- but alas, Ill be on the ECM stand all day....and if last year is any indication, its gonna be a real big day!
Ill try to grab 10 min to pop over and have a gander at some stage...
Should be great fun!
I reckon milks better for dunking cookies in. *Dont waste it on a good coffee.
I think Nunu just entered too!
(same way that Dennis did, a post in this thread is as good as an entry form).
Who else is going to be upstairs at the rocks at "high noon" for the CS shoot-out @ Aroma
until I can do art for arts sake, i also agree wholeheartedly.............
its what in the cup that counts!
having a little trouble getting the smile right ;)
That looks like one very valuable lumpy spud, Dennis.... *:P
Not good enough Dennis, ears mate, where are the ears?
Andy, Michelle, I think Viviane has just registered to compete ::)Originally Posted by Viviane link=1183709088/15#20 date=1183996951
If Im there (and Im hoping to be), then Ill be happy to supply the contender for last place... :P
Itll be a fight to the death for last place :P
Im a bit worried. Anyone who spends time making pancakes and then balances them on top of a bunny should not be messed with - especially when the bunny looks like its wearing an oversized sock!
Viviane and nunus entries (nominations?) have been noted :)
We have five people... come on... we need more!!
Please dont feel scared, its going to be a ton of fun!
Just a quick question,
will the machines be super automatic so its an even comp??
(sorry the people at choice made me do it !)
Well all be forced to use blade grinders. Andy had better have a spitoon nearby.
I found a blade grinder in the garage last week.
So can I bring my own or would that constitute an unfair advantage?
have Bamix on hand!
So do I - should warn you though that the blade grinder attachment for it was my first coffee grinder, so Im well practiced at pulverising beans. :P
Dont make me lug my pestle and mortar in!
Imagine the looks Id get on the train.
CS shootout....sounds like Counter Strike shootout....
Counter Strike is a mod of a game called Half Life where terrorists go around assassinating VIPs, blow up targets and hold hostages and the counter-terrorists go around trying to thwart the terrorist attacks.
But seeing this is a coffee related website, it makes no sense...
Wushoes, you could make it really interesting that you get an espresso everytime you respawn in a deathmatch game :D
one of my fav games i dont get time for, but then again there is americas army i dont have time to play either....
we now return you back to the topic of this thread...
Or have your energy level displayed as how many cups of espresso you have left! ;DOriginally Posted by Sullo link=1183709088/30#34 date=1184079603
Java "Coffee = Energy!" phile
3 more entries - Wushoes, Sullo and Java "US celebrity"phile
I had a laugh..even if I was going I dont think Id be allowed to enter. I work as a professional barista. On a similar note, I do believe Luca is going. ;)
Thats ok I work as a professional fish and chip shop wannabe barista, so at least we will be
beaten by a class act.........or not ;)
What for, carrying the mortar and pestle or the pancake on your head?Originally Posted by nunu link=1183709088/30#32 date=1184076488
Bring it on!Originally Posted by Wushoes link=1183709088/30#37 date=1184135089
So, Lucas competing with one arm tied behind his back...?
I reckon we should make him drink scalding hot tea before he starts - that way hed never be able to taste his shots properly.Originally Posted by mwatt link=1183709088/30#40 date=1184213471
This isnt an entry by the way, wouldnt be fair for the MC to compete!
You could compete with one arm behind your back if
a) you have a doserless grinder
b) you la marzocco portafilters so you can tamp with 1 hand.
So, can I confirm we have
Luca (armless, blindfolded ... ::) )
Anyone else want to play? We need to know soon...
Throw your hat in the ring Michelle...You know you want to! 8-)Originally Posted by mwatt link=1183709088/30#43 date=1184632858
PS- Luca is not allowed to win the tamper under any circumstances as he already has one. Please take note, judges ;)
Throws hat ... misses ring. Always was terrible at quoits
If we get enough people to make it work then Ill have a go too.
We need 6 people to make a round, and so far we have 6... though Im not sure if Luca is aware hes competeing...
A win by default is still a win:P
I suppose... we could have a round of three, then another of four...
Two clarifications:Originally Posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1183709088/30#44 date=1184633530
(a) I dont remember entering!
(b) I do not already have one. I have three coffeelab tampers ;D
Dave and Peter will also be up too; am I to assume that they are also entered?
JQ602 - Avalon - SYD departs 6am
JQ627 - SYD - Avalon departs 19:45
These are the flight numbers that were to take me to Sydney so that I could compete in and win the CS shootout (nice to be able to say that with out worry of competing!!!!).
They cost me $222 and are up for grabs to anyone that wants to pay me the $222,
(it will cost me a fee of $104 on top of this to change the flights)
so the asking price is not negotiable, anyway if anyone is interested pm me with your phone number, and I will get in touch asap.
please note that they are Avalon departures and return same day.
And no Dennis I am not worried about my Latte art being found out to be fraudulent!! 8-) ::)
I was truly hoping to be in Sydney to meet other Coffee Snobs, definitely next year or maybe another event.
Good luck all if luck is what you need, for those entered take a risk its far more fun. ;)
